BRADENTON, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team scored nine runs in the first and three in the second and held on for a 16-10 win over Yale Wednesday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The Buckeyes have now won 10 straight games and are 11-3 overall.
Jacob Howell (Sr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) led the game off with a double and the Buckeyes were off and running. Seven hits and 13 batters later OSU took the field for the bottom of the first with a 9-0 lead. Sophomore J.B. Shuck (Galion, Ohio/Galion) had a single, two RBI and a walk in the first. Shuck’s hit in the first extended his hitting streak to all 11 games he has played in the field this season (he has also pitched three games).
After giving up three runs in the bottom of the first, OSU responded with three runs of its own in the top of the second and led 12-4 after two innings. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs each scored a run in the third to make it 13-5 after three.
Freshman Josh Edgin (Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started the game and went three innings before being replaced by sophomore Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown Univ.) in the fourth. Sizemore had a rough first inning, giving up four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Yale cut the lead to 13-9. But the right-hander settled down and gave up just one more run over the next five innings to earn the win, the first of his Buckeye career.
Ohio State added two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to secure the win. Junior centerfielder Matt Angle (Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) was 3-for-5 on the day with one RBI and a walk, while senior shortstop Jason Zoeller (Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) went 2-for-3, drove in four runs and hit his second homerun of the year. Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and Ben Toussant (Fr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each drove in two runs. Chris Weitlispach took the loss for Yale, giving up nine runs (five earned) in two-thirds of an inning. Yale used four total pitchers. Ohio State had 17 hits in the game, Yale 11.
