Freshman Minium earns first career win, OSU beats Yale 11-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

BRADENTON, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team stretched its winning streak to nine games with an 11-3 win over Yale Monday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The Buckeyes are 4-0 on their spring break trip and 10-3 overall.
Freshman Theron Minium (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) earned his first career win in his first career start, pitching six innings and giving up just two earned runs. The lefty struck out seven and walked none.
The Buckeyes scored runs in each of the first four innings and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. After Yale scored two runs in the top of the sixth, OSU put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth for an 11-2 lead. The Bulldogs added one run in the eighth.
Freshman Cory Rupert (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) and sophomore J.B. Shuck (Galion, Ohio/Galion) led Ohio State at the plate. Rupert was 2-for3 with four RBI and Shuck 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jacob Howell (Sr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) also had two hits each. Howell and Shuck also hit their first home runs of the year.
Leading 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth the Buckeyes started out the inning with two walks. After a sacrifice bunt, Rupert singled to drive in two runs and advanced to second on the throw home. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) was intentionally walked brining junior catcher Eric Fryer (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) to the plate. Fryer made the Bulldogs pay by singling to drive in the third OSU run of the inning. Shuck then hit a laser down the first base line that the first baseman couldn’t handle, scoring Angle and moving Fryer to third. Fryer scored the final Buckeye run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Chris Walsh took the loss for Yale, giving up five earned runs in three innings. The Buckeyes used three relief pitchers in the game, with Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown Univ.), Eric Best (R-Fr., Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and Josh Edgin (Fr., Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) each pitching one inning. It was Sizemore’s first appearance as a Buckeye. Ohio State had 12 hits in the game, Yale 11.
The Buckeyes are off on Tuesday before facing Yale again on Wednesday, March 21, at 10:30 a.m. ET at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
