COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four Ohio State baseball players were named to the All-Mideast Region team, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings announced Tuesday. Ronnie Bourquin earned first-team honors, while Dan DeLucia, Eric Fryer and Matt Angle garnered second-team honors.
Bourquin, the Big Ten Player of the Year, led the league with a .416 batting average, .612 slugging percentage, .492 on-base percentage, 91 hits, 66 RBI and 134 total bases. The second-round draft choice of the Detroit Tigers came within one hit of tying the school record set by Steve Carvati in 2004. Bourquin had a hit in all but 11 of the 58 games he played and reached base in all but seven games. He had a career-long 14-game hit streak and led the Buckeyes with 27 multiple-hit games, including four contests with four hits. Bourquin hit 15 doubles, two triples and eight home runs, the second-best total on the team. He hit .417 with 45 hits and six home runs in Big Ten.
Angle was second on the team and fourth in the Big Ten with a .369 batting average. His 79 hits also ranked second on the team and fourth in the conference. The sophomore from Whitehall, Ohio (Whitehall-Yearling), had 13 doubles, one triple and drove in 27 runs while scoring a league-best 63 runs. His 266 plate appearances tied for the best in the Big Ten. The unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection stole 25 of 29 bases and had six outfield assists. He also had 12 sacrifice bunts and five sac flies, which each tied for second most in the Big Ten. DeLucia became the first 10-game winner at Ohio State since 1999 as he finished 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten. The junior co-captain from Columbus, Ohio (Bishop Watterson) led the Big Ten in wins and innings pitched (108.0) and led his team with 69 strikeouts. His strikeout total ranked eighth in the conference, while his 3.25 ERA ranked ninth. DeLucia earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. DeLucia started 14 of his 15 games, primarily as the No. 1 pitcher on a staff that led the league with its 3.46 ERA. He is 19-10 in his three years at Ohio State with a 3.80 ERA, which ranks 13th in school history.
Fryer was named second-team All-Big Ten after a break-through season in which he batted .368, the third best total on the team and fifth in the Big Ten. He pounded out 78 hits, including 14 doubles, four triples and five home runs. The sophomore from Reynoldsburg, Ohio (Reynoldsburg), drove in 52 runs, which was the second most on the team and the fourth most in the conference. Fryer scored 46 runs and had an on-base percentage of .542, the third best total by a Buckeye in 2006.
Ohio State finished 37-21 overall and was third in the Big Ten with a 19-12 conference mark.
