OSU Centerfielder Matt Angle Named Big Ten Player of the Week – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State centerfielder Matt Angle was named the Big Ten Player of the Week Tuesday after going 11-for-17 as the Buckeyes to four wins on their trip to Clearwater, Fla., last weekend.
The Buckeyes swept a doubleheader from Lehigh (17-10, 13-6) and beat Northern Iowa (9-6) and Bethune-Cookman (9-1) at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium in Clearwater. Angle, a sophomore from Whitehall, Ohio (Whitehall-Yearling), hit .647 with seven RBI and scored nine runs and had a hit in his first five at bats vs. Bethune-Cookman, including a triple in the sixth, before ending the streak with a fielder’s choice in the top of the ninth. It was his second straight Sunday to go 5-for-6 (also hits in first five at bats) March 5 in a 12-11 loss to Western Michigan in Jacksonville, Fla.
In the four games this past weekend, he had a .765 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base percentage. He also had a pair of sacrifice flies and a sac bunt. He was 3-for-4 on stolen bases and had 15 putouts. Angle is batting .452 for the season (19-for-42). The Buckeyes hit .468 in the four games with 48 runs (45 RBI) on 73 hits (15 doubles, three triples, two home runs).
After winter quarter final exams, Ohio State will travel to Bradenton, Fla., on Thursday and will begin a stretch of six games in six days Sunday with a single game vs. Massachusetts. The Buckeyes also will play a single game vs. Illinois-Chicago and will play two games against both Cornell and Vermont before returning to Columbus, March 24. Ohio State, with a 6-4 record, will open the 10th season at Bill Davis Stadium Wednesday, March 29 vs. Toledo at 2 p.m.
