Scarlet Takes Series Lead with 10-6 Win vs. Gray – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gray sprinted out to a 4-0 lead, but back-to-back four-run innings by the Scarlet gave them a 10-6 victory Tuesday in game two of the Scarlet and Gray World Series at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, Scarlet moves to 1-0-1 in the best-of-five series after the teams played to an 8-8 Monday in the opening game.
Scarlet scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to spark it to victory. Trailing 4-2 entering the fourth, Scarlet used a lead-off triple by Wes Schirtzinger (Sr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North). He scored with a one-out double by Chris Griffin (Fr., Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North). Arp reached second on a single by Jonathan Zizzo (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]). A fielder’s choice by Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) stopped Arp from scoring. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) doubled to left-center to score both Zizzo and Kennedy. Fryer moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw by the Gray third baseman who was fielding a grounder by Zach Hurley (Fr., Springboro, Ohio/Springboro). That gave Scarlet a two-run lead, 6-4.
Scarlet blew the game open with another four-spot in the fifth. Chris Macke (Jr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) drew a lead off walk and went to second on a grounder through the right side by Matt Streng (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and scored on a pinch-hit single up the middle by Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg). Arp was out at second as Zizzo spoiled a double play by reaching first just ahead of the throw to first. That put runners at the corners for Kennedy, who singled to right to score Streng. A second throwing error on third baseman Brian DeLucia (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) allowed Zizzo to score the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Kennedy led all batters in going 3-for-4 for the Scarlet. He knocked in two runs and scored three, while Fryer batted in four. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) led the Gray in going 2-for-4 with three RBI. J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) got the win for Scarlet. He allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings of work before handing the ball over to Eric Shinn (Fr., Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest), who allowed two seventh-inning runs by the Gray on two hits. Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown Univ.) took the loss for the Gray after allowing six runs on 10 hits in four innings pitched.
As it did in game one, Gray jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a couple of runs in the top of the first inning. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) led off the game with a single to shallow left-center field and advanced to second on a one-out single through the right side by Shuck. A double steal put both runners in scoring position. Miller plated both runners when he beat out an infield single. A throw home trying to stop Shuck from scoring was not in time. Scarlet stranded a runner at third base in the bottom of the inning.
Gray added a run in the second when Cory Kovanda (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored on a ground out by Cory Rupert (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison). Kovanda reached with a one-out single to left-center field. He reached third on Angle’s hit-and-run.
Miller came through with another RBI in the third inning, sending a solo shot over the left-field fence to lift Gray to a 4-0 lead. Scarlet came back with two runs in the bottom of the third, the first on a solo home run to left by Kennedy. Fryer followed with a double, went to second on a single by Hurley and scored on a ground out by Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy).
Game three of the Scarlet and Gray World Series will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Diamond Club will be tailgating in the parking lot beginning at 5 p.m. The teams will play again Thursday and Friday, if necessary. Both games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
