COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State picked up it fourth straight midweek victory with an 8-1 win Wednesday night over Bowling Green to earn its 20th win of the year and move to 20-17 on the season. Now efforts shift back to the Big Ten race that finds the Buckeyes one game out of first place in a three-way tie for third in the league standings.
Next up for Ohio State is a four-game road trip to Bloomington, Ind., where it meets a 23-17 Indiana team that is tied for seventh in the Big Ten with a 7-9 record, only two games behind the third-place Buckeyes and three behind the top two teams in the league. Michigan and Minnesota lead the league with 10-6 records, while Penn State and Purdue join the Buckeyes at 9-7. Michigan State is 8-8 to round out the Top 6, which would make it to the Big Ten tournament if it were to start today.
Last weekend, Michigan took three of four games from the Buckeyes to snap a four game win streak, the longest of the season. Ohio State, which had entered the series alone in first place after taking three of four at Michigan State the third week of the conference season, climbed back into first place after its game two victory against Michigan. After the Wolverines took the final two games of the series, the Buckeyes dropped back one game. Indiana split four games at Illinois last weekend.
Ohio State and Indiana will play a single game at 4:05 p.m. (EDT) Friday before a playing a doubleheader at 2:05 p.m. (EDT) Saturday. The series concludes with a single game at 2:05 p.m. (EDT) Sunday. Games two and four of the series will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM). All four games will be broadcast on the Internet at www.wosu.org.
ABOUT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes improved to 20-17 on the season by picking up a midweek victory Wednesday night against Bowling Green, defeating the Falcons 8-1. Ohio State, which set a school record with nine shutouts in 2003, was denied it first shutout of the season when Bowling Green scored one run in the ninth inning. Three pitchers combined to allow two hits as the Buckeyes were paced by a four-RBI performance from Steve Caravati.
Ohio State is 9-7 at the midway mark of the Big Ten schedule after going 2-3 last week, beating Wright State 13-4 April 21 before losing three of four games at home to Michigan last weekend. Michigan won 6-1 on Friday before a walk-off single by Jedidiah Stephen gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Wolverines won the night cap 8-4 and cruised to a 13-2 victory in the finale to clinch its second straight series victory in Columbus. Michigan is the only visiting Big Ten school to win a four-game series in the eight-year history of Bill Davis Stadium and has done it twice.
Drew Anderson led the Buckeyes in the five games last week with a .444 batting average (8-for-18). He had four doubles and scored four runs with one RBI. The leading RBI guy in the five games was Stephen who had five hits, including a double, to bat in five runs.Caravati hit a double and two home runs to knock in four from his six total hits. He scored seven runs in batting .375 for the week. Mike Rabin was 6-for-18 (.333) with two RBI.
Caravati leads the team with a .350 batting average through 37 games. He also leads the Buckeyes with eight home runs and took over the team RBI lead with the four he had Wednesday to up his season total to 29. Anderson is the team leader with 54 hits, including 19 for extra bases, and 13 doubles and is second on the team with a .346 batting average. The Buckeyes are batting .300 as a unit.
On the mound last weekend, the Buckeyes got a strong outing from Trent Luyster, who pitched the team to a complete game victory against Michigan in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. He allowed only three hits as Ohio State got by Michigan with a seventh-inning walk-off single from Stephen. Luyster struck out five and walked three in his first start since April 3.
The Buckeyes, which own a 4.79 ERA, are not sure of their pitching plans in Bloomington, but it is likely that Scott Lewis will return to the mound to start one game. Josh Newman will get the start in game one. Newman is 5-4 with a 4.55 ERA in 65.1 innings. He has 70 strikeouts, which is the total he finished with each of the last two seasons, and 20 walks. Saturday, Lewis and Mike Madsen will likely get the nod. Following up a 2003 season in which he was Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Lewis is 0-0 this season with a 6.48 in 8.1 innings after battling back from Tommy John surgery for his first start April 11. Madsen is 5-3 on the year with a 4.76 ERA in 56.2 innings. He has 38 strikeouts. Luyster could start game four if he is not used much in relief. If he is, expect freshman Dan DeLucia to get the ball in game four.
ABOUT THE HOOSIERS
Indiana moved to 7-9 in the Big Ten after splitting four games at Illinois last weekend. The Hoosiers won 9-2 in the opening game of the series, but lost both ends of the doubleheader 3-1 and 3-2 before rallying in the finale for a 17-8 victory. The Hoosiers are 23-17 overall and did not play a midweek game this week.
Senior shortstop Seth Bynum leads the Hoosiers with a .416 batting average and is the only Indiana player to play and start all 40 games. Bynum also is leading the team with 62 hits, and 49 RBI. The squad is batting .314 on the season and has six players batting better than .300. Kevin Mahar (.353) is the team’s leader with 11 home runs and Joe Kemp (.349) is leading with 13 doubles and four triples.
On the mound, the squad owns a 4.85 ERA. Last weekend at Illinois, Indiana went with a rotation of Nick Vitielliss on Friday, Josh Lewis and Chris Behrens on Saturday and Brian Lortz in the series finale. The Hoosiers have not indicated a rotation for this weekend. Vitielliss is 4-2 with a 4.72 ERA and has 34 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. Lewis is 3-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 40 innings with 27 strikeouts and 12 walks, while Behrens is 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 27.1 innings with 26 strikeouts and 22 walks. Lortz is 3-1 with a 5.85 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 40.0 innings.
Bob Morgan is 754-453 in his 21st year at Indiana. He is 1,042-543-6 in his 28th season as a college coach.
AGAINST INDIANA
Ohio State leads the all-time series at Indiana 141-94. The team’s split last year’s meeting in Columbus with Ohio State taking victory in the first two games before the Hoosiers won the final two games of the series to snap a four-game losing streak. The Buckeyes have won the last two series in Bloomington 2-1 after rain outs in the final game each year. OSU head coach Bob Todd is 42-23 all-time against the Hoosiers.

BUCKEYES SPLIT 2003 SERIES WITH INDIANA
Ohio State left-handed pitcher Scott Lewis out-dueled Indiana righty Jacob Cary to lead the second-place Buckeyes to a 9-3 victory against the third-place Hoosiers in the first game. Lewis, who entered the game with a 5-0 record and 1.59 ERA opposing Cary’s 7-0 record and 2.25 ERA, struck out 16 Indiana batters, giving him 36 strikeouts in his last two starts. He equaled a school record by fanning 20 batters the week before in a 6-1 complete game victory over Iowa. Lewis, who was named the National Pitcher of the Week, went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (all unearned) on three hits with 16 strikeouts and five walks in getting to 6-0 on the season. Christian Snavely had three hits – a double in the first, a single in the third and a home run in the fifth – to lead the Buckeyes.
A bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning by Buckeye second baseman Drew Anderson lifted Ohio State to an extra-inning victory over Indiana in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. The RBI capped a crazy game that saw the Hoosiers come back from an 8-0 deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Buckeyes tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a home run by Mike Rabin before Indiana scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-9 lead putting pressure on the Buckeyes to tie or win the game in the bottom of the inning. Ohio State tied the game on a Derek Kinnear home run that scored three to even the game 12-12. Anderson had three hits in the game in his six at bats, plating the one run while scoring once. The first four batter’s at the top of the Ohio State order each finished with three hits, including home runs by Rabin and Snavely.
Indiana shortstop Seth Bynum went 4-for-5 from the plate and Josh Lewis pitched a complete game to lead the Hoosiers to a 13-2 win over Ohio State in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. The loss ended Ohio State’s nine-game win streak and was the first home loss for the Buckeyes of the season. The Hoosiers scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings and exploded for six runs in the fifth and another four runs in the sixth, outing hitting the Buckeyes 16-5 in the game. The Buckeyes committed five errors.
Indiana used home runs by Ryan Donley and Vasili Spanos to salvage a series split with a 6-3 victory over Ohio State in the Sunday series finale. Ohio State overcame two errors to tie the game in the second inning, but Donley’s homer broke the tie in the fourth and Spanos’ jack scored two in the fifth.
Kinnear batted .545 in the series to lead the Buckeyes. Snavely was 7-for-14 with a double and three home runs for seven RBI and 17 total bases (1.214 slugging percentage).
CARAVATI LEADS TO 8-1 WIN VS. BG
Ohio State leftfielder Steve Caravati batted in four runs leading the Buckeyes to an 8-1 victory over Bowling Green Wednesday night in front of 3,956 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.
Caravati opened the scoring in the bottom half of the third inning with a two-out single to score Drew Anderson, who singled to right field then advanced to second after Jacob Howell walked. Caravati drove Anderson home as he smacked Bowling Green pitcher Tyler Smith’s 3-2 pitch through the left side.
Caravati collected his 27th and 28th RBI of the season two innings later as he belted his team-leading eighth home run to left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Buckeyes scored another run in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to four runs. Anderson led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single through the right side and then stole bases 13 and 14 of the season to get to third before a sacrifice fly by Caravati gave the Buckeyes a 5-0 lead. It was his fourth RBI of the game. Ohio State began the eighth inning with three straight hits to add three more runs.
The Falcons spoiled the Buckeye bid at their first shutout of the season, scoring one run without the benefit of a hit. After a fly out to start the inning, reliever Brett Hatcher walked the next three batters and then plunked Jimmy Lipari to make the score 8-1. Hatcher struck out the next batter and then got a fly out to end the game.
Caravati finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and added the sacrifice. Anderson was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Paul Faraincci was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Rabin batted in the other run in a 1-for-4 effort.
OSU starter Jeffrey Carroll, who left with a 3-0 lead after five innings of action, got the win to improve to 2-2 this season.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Ohio State improved to 4-1 in Wednesday night home games this season after the 8-1 win over Bowling Green on Wednesday. After losing the first home midweek date to Eastern Michigan 2-1, the Buckeyes have rattled off four straight victories, downing Oakland 14-4, Dayton 4-1 and Wright State 13-4 to go with the seven run win over the Falcons this past Wednesday.
Led by Steve Caravati’s .556 (10-for-18) batting average, the team is batting .369 in the five games, which is up substantially from the .300 average in all 37 games this season. Among players who have started at least four of the five games, five Buckeyes are batting .300 or better. Joining Caravati on that list are Drew Anderson (.524), Mike Rabin (.381), Brett Garrard (.333) and Jacob Howell (.318). The team also has a 2.20 ERA. Three different pitchers have accounted for the wins. Jesse Paciorek was the pitcher of record against Oakland and Brett Hatcher picked up the win against Dayton, while Jeffrey Carroll, who has made three starts in Wednesday night home games, getting the wins against Wright State and Bowling Green.
Ohio State has out-scored opponents 40-12 and has out hit them 66-33 in Bill Davis Stadium midweek affairs.

OSU FALLS 6-1 TO MICHIGAN
Michigan scored three runs to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning and held Ohio State to only three hits the rest of the way to knock off the Buckeyes 6-1 Friday in front of a season-high 4,455 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.
Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Ohio State got the run back in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a pair of base hits by Steve Caravati and Jedidiah Stephen to start the inning. Jason Zoeller delivered the two-out RBI scoring Caravati to tie the game 1-1. Caravati’s lead-off single to right-center field extended his hit streak to a career long 13 games.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the fifth inning to break the tie and take a 4-1 lead. Michigan turned another leadoff walk in the seventh into its fifth run of the game to take a four-run lead. Michigan added a run in the top of the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly by Scheidt that scored Bohm.
Zoeller led Ohio State at the plate going 3-for-4 with the team while five others provided one hit apiece.
STEPHEN DELIVERS 2-1 WIN, LUYSTER PITCHES THREE-HITTER
Jedidiah Stephen singled down the right-field line with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to deliver the winning run as Ohio State defeated Michigan 2-1 Saturday.
Derek Kinnear reached on a fielding error on Michigan third baseman A.J. Scheidt. Wolverine starting pitcher Derek Feldkamp walked Drew Anderson. A base hit through the right side by Jacob Howell moved Anderson to third before Feldkamp and the Wolverines intentionally walked Steve Caravati to load the bases. Stephen got his only hit of the game to deliver Anderson as the winning run. Anderson finished 3-for-3, while Howell finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt. He was also hit by a pitch.
Michigan got its first hit of the game in the fourth inning. The Buckeyes managed the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out solo home run by Brett Garrard.
Trent Luyster improved to 3-3 after pitching a three-hit complete game, allowing the only Michigan run in the fourth inning, to go with five strikeouts and a three walks.
MICHIGAN DOUBLES UP BUCKS
With a one-run lead going into the sixth inning, Michigan scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to save a doubleheader split with an 8-4 victory in front of 4,091 at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Wolverines moved ahead 6-3 with a pair of runs on five base hits in the sixth inning. Garrard singled in the fourth Buckeye run in the sixth inning.
Matt Butler singled through the right side with one out in the seventh inning and then Jeff Kunkel was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second before A.J. Scheidt flew out to center field. The runners moved up on a throwing error on OSU third baseman Jason Zoeller that loaded the bases. Mahler delivered a huge hit to center field that scored both Butler and Kunkel as Michigan took an 8-4 lead.
Four different Wolverines finished the game with two hits, including Mahler, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Getz, Roberts and Roblin each added two hits as Michigan out-slugged the Buckeyes 11-5. Five different Ohio State players had singles, including a two-RBI home run by Steve Caravati.
MICHIGAN REPEATS SERIES SWEEP
Michigan broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning by scoring nine runs en route to a 13-2 victory against Ohio State Sunday that clinched the second straight 3-1 series win against the Buckeyes on their home field. The Wolverines are the only visiting team to win a conference series in the eight-year history of Bill Davis Stadium.
OSU starter Dan DeLucia walked the first two batters of the fourth inning and hit the third to load the bases. A ground out by Brad Roblin scored Eric Rose and then a double down the right-field line by A.J. Scheidt gave the Wolverines a 3-0 lead. Jeff Kunkel followed with a double to score Scheidt for the fourth Michigan run.
Brandon Roberts singled through the right side to put runners at the corners before a pitching change. Jesse Paciorek replaced DeLucia and immediately allowed a single by Leif Mahler through the left side to score Kunkel to give Michigan a 6-0 lead. Chris Getz reached on a fielder’s choice that caught Mahler at second and was able to score along with Roberts on a two-RBI double by Rose.
DeLucia had started strong retiring nine of his first 10 batters. He allowed the first six runs on three hits, three walks and one hit batsman. He had only one strikeout in falling to 1-2 on the year.
The Buckeyes scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mike Rabin delivered a one-out single through the right side to become the first Ohio State base runner of the day. Steve Caravati followed with a single to left field and then Jedidiah Stephen doubled inside the third-base bag and down the left-field line to score both Rabin and Caravati to make the score 9-2.
Michigan added a run in the fourth after three straight one-out hits off Trey Fausnaugh to take a 10-2 lead and then scored three runs in the top of the eighth to extend its lead to 13-2.
Kunkel finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored to lead Michigan. Four other Wolverines added two hits each as they out-hit Ohio State 13-6. Hammond picked up the win, going 8.0 innings, allowing the two runs in the fourth inning with two walks. He did not have a strikeout in the game. Rabin was the only Buckeye to have multiple hits.
NEWMAN CLIMBING STRIKEOUT LIST
Josh Newman struck out four batters against Michigan last Friday to increase his career strikeout total to 261, which is good enough for fourth place on the school’s all-time strikeout list. He trails the 281 strikeouts by Bill Cunningham (1982-85) by 24. Newman recorded a career high 14 strikeouts against Illinois, April 2, bettering his all-time best off 11 against Michigan in 2001. Newman had a stretch three games in which he struck out a total of 33 batters earlier this season.
Scott Lewis, who returned to action April 11 following a 10-month, 25-day layoff after he tore his ulnar collateral ligament at Minnesota the final weekend of the 2003 regular season, returned to strikeout six batters in a five-inning start at Purdue and another six at Michigan State. Lewis had Tommy John surgery on May 29, 2003. Lewis is 12th on the school’s all-time strikeout list with 230.

NEWMAN FOURTH ALL-TIME IN WINS
Josh Newman ranks fourth on the Ohio State career wins list with 29 victories with the Buckeyes. The senior from Wheelersburg, Ohio, who was drafted in the 31st round of the 2003 draft by the Cincinnati Reds, will tie Pete Perini (1947-50) for third with his next victory. Newman won eight games each of his first three seasons and is 3-3 in 2004. The school record for career victories is 36 by Justin Fry (1995-99). Newman’s 331.0 career innings ranks fourth all-time. He now needs 13.1 innings to move past Perini, who is third with 344.0 career innings and 49.0 innings to move past E.J. Laratta (1999-2002), who is second with 379.2 career innings.

Ohio State second baseman Drew Anderson tripled three times in a span of five games (games 14-18) to move into a second-place tie on the school’s all-time triples list. The figure is within one of the record set by Jason Driscoll (1997-2000).

ANDERSON TIED FOR 3RD IN STEALS
Drew Anderson increased his career stolen base tally to 51 with a pair of steals Wednesday night vs. Bowling Green. The total broke a tie with Bo Rein (1965-67) and moved the junior from Brownsburg, Ind., into third-place all by himself. Anderson is a perfect 14-for-14 this season. He was 20-for-25 as a freshman and was 17-for-19 last season. The school record is 73 set by Roy Marsh (1992-94). He needs 12 steals to tie Mike Check (1998-2001) for second place.

The Buckeyes return to Bill Davis Stadium, Wednesday, May 5 against Detroit in the first of 11 straight home games. The stretch also includes four games with Penn State and Northwestern and midweek games with Akron and Cleveland State, the final home game of the season May 19. Ohio State closes the regular season at Minnesota for the second straight year.
