COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michigan defeated Ohio State 3-1 in the nightcap to take both ends of a doubleheader Saturday in front of 2,571 fans at Bill Davis Stadium. Having lost the opening game 5-4 in eight innings, it was the first time since 2000 that the Buckeyes were swept in a home Big Ten doubleheader.
Michigan turned a lead-off hit in the top of the second inning by Jake Fox into the first run of the game. He singled through the left side and then moved to second on a passed ball. OSU starter Nate Smith (Sr., Byran, Ohio/Bryan) struck out Mike Sokol and got Jordan Cantalamessa to fly out to center field. Brandon Roberts sent a shot to left that was misplayed by Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) and Fox was able to score from second to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines added a run in the third inning with two outs. Nick Rudden delivered a two-out single through the left side and then stole second. Brock Koman sent a shot to right-center field and Rudden scored to extend the lead to two runs.
The third Michigan run plated in the fifth inning on a double to left-center field by Koman. The run scored Rudden, who boarded on an error.
Ohio State finally put a run on the scoreboard in the sixth inning to pull within a 3-1 score. Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a two-out single to left-center by Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover). Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) walked to load the bases full of Buckeyes and then pinch hitter Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) grounded to third. Koman could not come up with the ball, allowing Caravati to reach third and Rabin to score. Phil Tognetti got the win for Michigan to improve to 5-3 on the year. He gave up the one run (earned) on four hits with just one strikeout against a trio of walks. Tim Leveque picked up his third save of the season. Smith got the loss to fall to 2-6 on the year. He pitched the entire game, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits. He had six strikeouts and one walk, but did not have much defensive support as the Buckeyes committed three errors.
Michigan had to overcome four errors, but out-hit Ohio State 6-4 in the game. Koman was 2-for-3 to lead the Wolverines. For Ohio State, four different players had hits.
The Buckeyes and Wolverines will conclude the series with a single game Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WOSU Radio (820 AM). Ohio State has yet to lose a Big Ten series at Bill Davis Stadium, which opened in 1997.
