Indiana Takes Game Two of Doubleheader from Ohio State 13-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana shortstop Seth Bynum went 4-for-5 from the plate and Josh Lewis pitched a complete game to lead the Hoosiers to a 13-2 win over Ohio State in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium. The loss ended Ohio State’s nine-game win streak though the Buckeyes can win the series with a win in Sunday’s series finale.
The Hoosiers scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings and exploded for six runs in the fifth and another four runs in the sixth, outing hitting the Buckeyes 16-5 in the game. The Buckeyes committed five errors in the game.
Designated hitter Nick Evans reached on a throwing error by second baseman Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and moved to second when the ball got past first baseman Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura). He moved to second on a ground out by left fielder Ryan Donley and scored on a fielding error by OSU third baseman Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster).
Donley doubled in Evans in the fourth inning to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead and then came the big six-run fifth inning. Four of the first five batters had a hit, including a lead-off double through the left side by Brad DeStefano. Kenny Marrs and Bynum both singled before OSU starter Greg Prenger (Sr., Harpster, Ohio/Upper Sandusky) walked Corby Heckman. Bynum single scored DeStefano and then a single up the middle by Vasili Spanos brought home both Marrs and Bynum.
Evans reached on a fielding error by Farinacci on an awkwardly hit ball towards first. Donley then singled to left field and then moved all the way to third when the ball got by Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley). Spanos scored on the play to build an 8-0 Hoosier lead. The four runs in the sixth inning were charged to Trent Luyster (So., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central), who entered the game in the fifth for Prenger. Four Hoosiers scored in the sixth inning on a total of six hits, including a two-RBI shot up the middle by Spanos. The runs were his third and fourth batted in during the game. Evans scored Spanos with a single to left and then he scored when reliever Justin Myers (Fr., Scottown, Ohio/Symmes Valley), playing his first game at Ohio State, hit DeStefano with the bases loaded.
Ohio State avoided the shutout in the bottom half of the inning when Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) sent a shot out of the park in left-center field that also scored Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), who reached on a fielder’s choice. The shot was his second of the day and his third of the series. He now has 26 career home runs, which ties for 14th with Doug Deeds and Matt Middleton.
Indiana added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kevin Mahar. The shot scored Bynum, who singled through the left side to lead off the inning and then moved to second on an error by Pettorini and to third on a passed ball.
Lewis got the win for Indiana to improve to 2-0 on the year, while Prenger got the loss to fall to 2-1. Prenger allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. Five different Buckeyes had the five hits for Ohio State. Indiana had 16 hits in the game. Donley finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Ohio State and Indiana will conclude the four-game Big Ten series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game can be heard on WOSU Radio (820 AM).
