Anderson Lifts Ohio State to 13-12 Victory vs. Indiana in Eighth – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning by Buckeye second baseman Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) lifted Ohio State to an extra-inning victory over Indiana in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium.
The RBI capped a crazy game that saw the Hoosiers come back from an 8-0 deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Buckeyes tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a home run by Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) before Indiana scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-9 lead putting pressure on the Buckeyes to tie or win the game in the bottom of the inning.
Ohio State tied the game on a Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) home run that scored three to even the game 12-12. The blast, his third of the season, scored Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), who walked. The Buckeyes left two runners in the inning and sent the game to extra innings, where the Buckeyes remained perfect in three extra-inning games this season, by virtue of Anderson’s RBI single down the left-field line.
Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) led off the eighth inning with a base hit through the left side and then Wes Schirtzinger (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), pinch running for Caughenbaugh, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pettorini and then to third on a wild pitch. With that Indiana coach Bob Morgan decided to intentionally walk Garrard, who wound up stealing second. The Hoosiers again went for the intentional walk, this time putting Kinnear at first to load the bases for Anderson’s game-winning shot. Anderson had three hits in the game in his six at bats, plating the one run while scoring once. The first four batter’s at the top of the Ohio State order each finished with three hits, including home runs by Rabin and Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance).
The win went to Ohio State’s Trent Luyster (So., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central), who pitched the final two innings as the fourth Buckeye pitcher used in the game. He improved to 3-0 on the season without allowing a hit. Chris Hynes got the loss for Indiana and fell to 2-1 on the season. He pitched just the final 1 1/3 innings, but allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits.
Hoosier shortstop Seth Bynum’s triple in the top of the seventh scored to runs to break the 9-9 tie. Brad DeStefano had a bunt single to lead off the inning and then Davis hit Kenny Marrs to put runners at first and second. Bynum’s shot caught Rabin running, but the ball got by him and rolled to the wall giving the Hoosiers an 11-9 lead. A double by Corby Heckman scored Bynum.
Ohio State had led by an 8-0 score, but gave way to Indiana, which scored runs in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh to counter eight runs scored in the first to innings by Ohio State. The Indiana comeback started in the third inning thanks to a home run by Bynum. The short to about the same location as the shot hit out by Garrard, also scored Marrs, who was hit by OSU starter Josh Newman (Jr., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg), and cut the score to 8-2.
The Hoosiers then added four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Parker led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. After a fly out by Ryan Donley, catcher Cody Wargo hit a shot to Garrard at short, but the throw to first, which would not have beat Wargo, sailed over Farinacci’s head and allowed Parker to reach third. Wargo caught the Buckeye defense off-guard and was able to score for the first run of the inning.
DeStefano singled to shallow right-center field and moved Wargo to third to put runners at the corners for Marrs, who went deep over the fence in left center field to score three and pull the Hoosiers within two.
Indiana scored another two runs in the fifth to pull even with the Buckeyes. Kevin Mahar led off the inning with an infield hit and then after a ground out by Parker, Donley doubled down the left field line to score Mahar, who had moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on the ground out by Parker. A passed ball allowed Donley to reach second and then a ground out by Wargo allowed Donley to tie the game 8-8.
After the Hoosiers but the first two runners on base to start the sixth inning, Mike Madsen (So., Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) was pulled in favor of closer Matt Davis (So., Mason, Ohio/William Mason). Davis gave up a sacrifice bunt to Mahar, the first batter he faced, as that moved runners to second and third. The Buckeyes then decided to intentionally walk pinch hitter Nick Evans, but a Davis wild pitch on the third throw of the inning, scored Heckman to hand Indiana a 9-8 lead.
Rabin hit his second home run of the season with one out in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 9-9, but the Buckeyes left two stranded, a walk to Snavely and Farinacci, who was hit by a pitch.
Spanos and Marrs each finished with three hits to lead Indiana in its season-best 17-hit attack. Ohio State had 18 hits in the game, but mostly in the first two innings.
Snavely gave the Buckeyes an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a shot that creeped over the fence in left field. His seventh home run of the season and the second of the series also scored Rabin, who boarded with a one-out infield single.
The scoring continued in the second frame as Ohio State scored six runs on seven hits. Garrard hit his first home run of the year, a shot over the 370 sign in the left-center field gap, with one out. Five straight base hits followed, started by Kinnear, who singled up the middle. Anderson singled to right and then a base hit up the middle by Rabin scored Kinnear.
Snavely got his second hit of the game, this time a base hit up the middle that scored Anderson. Steve Caravati (Jr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) singled through the left side and that scored Rabin to give Ohio State a 6-0 lead. After a ground out by Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura), Caughenbaugh delivered a two-RBI double down the right-field line that scored Snavely and Caravati to extend the margin to eight runs.
Ohio State and Indiana will play the second game of the doubleheader later Saturday before closing out the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game can be heard on WOSU Radio (820 AM).
