Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) homered in the first inning to put Ohio State out to an early 2-0 lead as the Buckeyes took a 6-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium.
The home run was his fifth home run of the year, a shot that was still climbing when it cleared the fence in right field. He picked up this 12th and 13th RBI of the year in also scoring Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), who reached on an infield single to short.
Iowa (9-15 overall , 2-8 in the Big Ten) scored one time in the top of the second inning to pull within a 2-1 margin. First baseman Mike Best drew a lead-off walk and then was bunted over to second on a sacrifice by third baseman Luis Andrulonis. Best then moved to second on an infield base hit by leftfielder Lance Guyer. He scored on a fielder’s choice by designated hitter Chris Steele that caught Guyer at second for the second out of the inning. Brad Husz looked at strike three from Josh Newman (Jr., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) to end the inning.
Anderson and Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) knocked in runs in the third inning to build the Buckeye lead to 4-1. Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) led off the inning with a base hit before being bunted over by a sacrifice by Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East). Anderson singled to right centerfield to bring in Kinnear from second and then a base hit up the middle by Caravati scored Anderson, who had stolen second to allow the score. The Buckeyes (17-10, 6-4) added another two runs in the fifth inning thanks to base hits by Caravati and Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura). Caravati’s second hit of the game, a shot through the left side, led off the inning and then a shot through the right side by Farinacci put runners at the corners. A fielding error by the Iowa third baseman on a ground ball by Doug Larason (Jr., Alexandria, Ohio/Johnstown) plated Caravati. Wes Schirtzinger (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) came in to pinch run for Larason and moved to second on a walk to Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and a to third on a fielder’s choice by Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). A sacrifice fly scored Schritzinger to give Ohio State the 6-1 margin of victory.
Snavely finished 1-for-3 in the game, scored twice and had a pair of RBI. Anderson and Farinacci each finished 2-for-3 on the after, as Anderson scored twice and batted in a run. Caravati was 2-for-4, scoring a run while sending another run home. Ohio State out-hit the Hawkeyes in the game 10-5 and each team had an error. Iowa’s offensive leader was Guyer, who had two hits.
Newman evened out his record to 3-3 in picking up the victory. He went the distance allowing the one run (earned) on five hits. He walked one and struck out four in getting the third straight complete game by Buckeye pitchers. Ryan Mentkowki got the loss for the Hawkeyes to fall to 1-4 on the year.
The teams will conclude the doubleheader immediately following this game before finishing off the series Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. Both games can be heard on WOSB Radio (91.1 and 106.7 FM), while Sunday’s game will be televised by ONN.
