LAFAYETTE, La. – Scott Lewis (So., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington) pitched another gem and Ohio State banged out 13 hits in helping the Buckeyes to a 7-3 victory over host Louisiana-Lafayette Friday night in the opening game of the Mardi Gras Baseball Classic in front of 2,652 at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Lewis struck out eight and walked two in 7.0 innings, while allowing just one run on three hits against the Ragin’ Cajuns. It was his second win of the season and his 10th win of his Buckeye career.
Ohio State, which scored only nine runs in the opening three games of the season, came out swinging. Despite leaving two runners stranded in the first inning, the Buckeyes got it going in the second frame. A single to shallow centerfield by Wes Schritzinger (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) scored both Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) to give the Buckeyes an early 2-0 lead. Pettorini was hit by a pitch and then moved to third on a Garrard single to shallow right field. The Buckeyes left the bases full in the inning.
Garrard’s triple of the base of the wall in left-centerfield to lead off the fourth inning led to another run. Garrard scored on a base hit by catcher Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton), giving the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead.
Another Ohio State run plated in the fifth as Christian Snavely took advantage of a misplayed Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura Village) single to right field. ULL rightfielder Bryan Sneed could not come with the ball and Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance), who had reached first on a walk, was able to score from first to extend the OSU lead to 4-0.
Lewis was able to carry a no-hitter into the fifth inning until it was broken up on a lead-off bunt by ULL second baseman Sport Voohires, who bunted down the grass along the third-base line. A throw by Snavely to first was late. Voohires advanced to second on a called balk on Lewis and then scored on a single up the middle by Dallas Morris to put the Ragin’ Cajuns on the scoreboard.
Ohio State added another pair of runs in the eighth inning to extend its lead to 6-1. The second ULL error of the game scored Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) from second. He reached base on an infield single to short and then advanced to second on a pass ball. A base hit through the left side by Garrard scored Snavely, who reached on the error.
Lewis departed after the seventh inning when he sat batters down in order. He was replaced by Chris Hanners (So., Groveport, Ohio/DeSales), who came in and sat down the eighth in order thanks to two strike outs and a ground out. Hanners went 1.1 innings before being replaced by Matt Davis (So., Mason, Ohio/William Mason) for the final two outs of the game.
Garrard was 3-for-4 with and RBI and scored twice while Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) finished the game 3-for-5 and scored one time. Mike Rabin (Jr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and Caravati each finished with a pair of hits each.
Andy Gros got the loss for Louisiana-Lafayette to fall to 1-3 on the year. He was responsible for all seven runs (four earned) on 13 hits in 8.1 innings of work. The Ragin’ Cajuns finished the game with five hits, from five different players.
Ohio State continues action Saturday with a 2 p.m. game vs. McNeese State and then closes action at the Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic with a 1 p.m. start against No. 24 Wichita State. Earlier in the day on Friday, McNeese State defeated Wichita State 4-3.
