The Buckeyes had pulled within a 3-2 score in the fourth inning, but OSU starting pitcher Nate Smith (Sr., Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) struggled on the mound and fell to 0-1 this young season. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings. After Chris Hanners’ (So., Groveport, Ohio/DeSales) 1.1 innings, Greg Prenger (Sr., Harpster, Ohio/ came in for 2.0 innings and Matt Davis (So., Mason, Ohio/William Mason) faced seven batters in the ninth and gave up seven hits before Mike Madsen (So., Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) entered the game. SMS put up a 10-spot on the Buckeyes in the ninth on a total of 11 hits.
Bob Zimmerman, who got the win to move to 1-1 on the year. In 7.0 innings he gave up all three OSU runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked two.
Neither team scored through two innings, but that quickly changed in the third inning as SMS scored three times on four hits. Catcher Tony Piazza doubled to lead off of the inning and then advanced to third on a costly passed ball. After Smith got second baseman Adam Pummill to pop up to the catcher, third baseman Brooks Colvin popped up just beyond the closely played infield. Piazza was able to score easily from third.
After the second out of the game, the Bears went on to score two more runs in the inning. Centerfielder Dant’e Brinkley singled up the middle to score Colvin and then rightfielder Greg Mathis singled to left-centerfield to bring in Brinkley, who had stolen second.
The Buckeyes got a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull within a 3-2 score. After first baseman Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) popped up to the third base, the Buckeyes benefited from four straight singles. Designated hitter Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) single to right and then leftfielder Wes Schirtzinger (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) singled to left. Shortstop Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) singled to right-centerfield to load the bases. Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) single to left-centerfield to plate the two runs for Ohio State as both Pettorini and Schritzinger scored.
SMS benefited from a Buckeye miscue in the top of the fifth inning to add another run. Colvin led off the inning popping up to third base and then Rick Wilson’s sharply hit grounder to second baseman Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) slipped by the fielder and gave the Bears a baserunner. Wilson advanced to second on a single by Brinkley and then scored on a single by designated Justin DePriest to give SMS a 4-2 lead.
A lead-off double by Shaun Marcum in the sixth inning led to the fifth SMS run. After a walk to Piazza, both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Pummill. Marcum scored on a ground out to short by Colvin, extending the Bears lead to 5-2.
Another lead-off hit to start the seventh inning led to yet another SMS run. Brinkley reached on an infield single and then moved to second on a single to right by Mathis. Both runners advanced on a Hanners’ wild pitch and then Brinkley scored on a single to shallow right field by pinch hitter Clay Wheeler. A great defensive play prevented another run from scoring. First baseman Chad Woodmansee flied out in foul territory and then made an amazing throw by Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) to catcher Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) caught Mathis trying to slide across the plate.
SMS added another pair of runs in the top of the eighth after getting the lead-off man aboard for the fifth time of the game. This inning, it was Marcum who led off with a double. After two outs, Colvin doubled to score Marcum and then Wilson’s Texas Leaguer scored Colvin to make the score 8-2 for the Bears.
Ohio State managed a run in the eighth inning to make the score 8-3. Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) began the inning with a base hit through the left side and moved to second on a walk to Snavely. An infield hit by Schirtzinger scored Caravati after he had advanced to third on a passed ball.
Ohio State returns to action next Friday when it takes on Louisiana-Lafayette at 7:30 p.m. at the Mardi Gras Ball in Lafayette, La. The Buckeyes will then meet McNeese State at 3 p.m. Saturday and Wichita State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
