Baseball Nabs Seven-run Shutout Victory over Detroit in Second Game – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eleven hits by Ohio State and 12 strikeouts by the pitching staff led the Buckeyes to a 7-0 shutout victory over Detroit to compete the doubleheader sweep Sunday at Bill Davis Stadium. With the pair of Sunday wins combined with Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Eastern Michigan, Ohio State improved to 7-3 on the year.
Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) led the way for Ohio State hitters as he went 4-for-5 as the lead-off hitter. He scored three times and batted in one run. He had a pair of singles, a double and a home run, needing only a double to become the first Buckeye to hit for the cycle since Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) accomplished that feat March 10, 2001, also against Detroit.
He led off the game with a double down the right-field line and then singled in the fourth and sixth innings before launching a home run to rightfield.
The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead in the first as Anderson turned his lead-off double into the first run of the game, advancing to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a base hit to right-centerfield by Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance). Snavely then stole second and later scored on a base hit by Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura).
Another two runs scored in the second. Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) walked and then stole second before reaching third on a infield hit by Drew Thomas (Fr., Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Briggs). Stephen scored on a wild pitch. Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) singled through the right side to bring in Thomas and extend the Buckeye lead to 4-0.
Farinacci’s sacrifice fly to centerfield in the fourth inning netted the fifth run of the game as Kinnear, who reached on a double to right, scored after reaching third on Anderson’s first single of the game. Anderson gave the Buckeyes their sixth run of the game when he scored on a throwing error by the Titans’ second baseman. Anderson’s home run in the eighth provided the 7-0 victory margin.
Trent Luyster (So., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central) got his first win as a Buckeye, going 5.0 innings and allowing five hits. He struck out four and walked one. He was relieved in the sixth inning by Kyle Brown (Sr., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington), who came in and allowed two hits while striking out five without a walk. Jesse Paciorek (So., Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) pitched the final inning, getting three strikeouts with a pair of walks.
Detroit advanced past second only once in the game on a total of seven hits. The Titans did commit three errors. Michael Girimonte got the loss for Detroit, dropping his record to 0-2.
Kinnear finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored, while Anderson was 5-for-9 on the afternoon with one RBI and three runs scored.
Ohio State now travels to Florida for a nine-game slate against Vermont, Eastern Kentucky and Illinois in non-conference action before meeting Northwestern in the Big Ten Conference opener, March 27. Eight of the nine games will be played at the IMG Academy in Bradenton and another will be played at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. The spring break trip begins March 21 against Vermont.
