Baseball Takes 4-2 Win Over Eastern Michigan in Game One – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) went 2-for-3 and doubled in the winning run in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie as Ohio State went on to defeat Eastern Michigan 4-2 in the home opener at Bill Davis Stadium Saturday. Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) added a home run in the seventh inning for the final margin in the first game of a doubleheader.
Eastern Michigan took the early lead, going up 2-0 in the top of the second inning. Ryan Goleski led off the inning with a double, but an appeal to first revealed he missed the bag and was called out. Scott Lewis (So., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington) then struck out Ryan Arnett before giving up the first of three Eagle hits in the inning. Luke Beeler singled to left-centerfield and then scored on a double by Jesse Cogswell. Tim Clouse, the very next batter, doubled Cogswell to put Eastern Michigan up by two.
Ohio State evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning as Drew Thomas (Fr., Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Briggs) scored on a single by Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ohio/Brownsburg) to put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard. Kinnear tied the game two batters later with a single to left-centerfield. Garrard scored on the play.
Garrard scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a double by Kinnear to left-centerfield. Garrard had reached on a error through the legs of third baseman Derrick Peterson. Garrard advanced to second as the ball trickled into shallow leftfield.
Snavely’s home run in the seventh inning provided a run of insurance. The shot over the fence in left-centerfield was his second home run of the season. Kinnear finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Garrard also had multiple hits for Ohio State, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Lewis pitched the first five innings, getting eight strikeouts against 19 batters. He walked one and allowed the two Eastern Michigan runs on three hits. He failed to get the decision after giving way to Mike Madsen (Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who went 3.0 innings allowing one hit and no runs. Matt Davis (So., Mason, Ohio/William Mason) pitched the final inning, retiring batters in order. Ryan Ford, who came on in relief of EMU starter Anthony Tomey after 3.2 innings, got the loss. He allowed the winning run and another on three hits.
Four different Eagle batters accounted for the four hits, three of which were doubles. Ohio State had six hits in the game.
