Five Buckeyes Named to Mardi Gras Ball All-Tournament Team – Ohio State Buckeyes

LAFAYETTE, La. – Five Buckeyes were named to the All-Tournament Team at last weekend’s Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic after going 2-1 in the three games. Ohio State opened with a win over host Louisiana-Lafayette and then lost to McNeese State before upending No. 24 Wichita State 3-2 in the finale. McNeese State went a perfect 3-0 in the tournament, followed by Ohio State, which went 2-1, Wichita State 1-2 and Louisiana-Lafayette 0-3.
Scott Lewis (So., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington) and Nate Smith (Sr., Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) were two of the three pitchers elected to the team by media covering the tournament. Lewis got the win for the Buckeyes against the Ragin’ Cajuns, going 7.0 innings striking out eight. He allowed one run on three hits. ULL got two runs in the ninth on Buckeye relief pitching. Smith went the distance in the nine-inning 3-2 upset win over No. 24 Wichita State. It was his first 9.0 inning compete game of his career. He allowed the two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in the 33 batters he faced.
Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) was named to the team at catcher. For the week, Kinnear finished with a .455 batting average, thanks to a 5-of-11 batting performance. Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownburg) earned mention at second base following his 5-for-14 effort at the plate. Of his five hits, two were doubles and another was a home run, giving him 10 total bases for the week and a slugging percentage of .714. Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) was the top shortstop at the Mardi Gras Ball, finishing with three hits, including a triple against ULL that led to the team’s third run of the game. Now 3-3 on the season, Ohio State opens its home portion of its schedule this Friday at Bill Davis Stadium with a split doubleheader at 1 p.m. between Detroit and Eastern Michigan. On Saturday, Ohio State will play Eastern Michigan and Detroit at 1 p.m.
