COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lefthanded pitcher Scott Lewis (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington Court House) and outfielder/firstbaseman Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) picked up more recognition this week as more postseason honors were announced.
Lewis was named to his second freshman all-America team, this time earning second-team placement by Baseball America. Lewis, who also had been named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American earlier this month, was joined by Swisher in being named to the All-Midwest Region team by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Both earned second-team honors.
Lewis, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year was also a first team All-Big Ten selection and finished the year with an 8-2 record and a team-best 2.84 ERA. He went 2-2 to start the year but won his last six decisions. Lewis finished the year with a Buckeye-best 91 strikeouts in 92.0 innings and was named to the all-tournament teams at the Big Ten Tournament and at the South Bend Regional.
Swisher, who became the highest draft pick in Ohio State history last month when he went as the 16th overall pick to the Oakland Athletics, batted.323 in his three years with the Buckeyes, batting in 156 runs with 35 home runs. He had a .613 slugging percentage and a .452 on-base percentage while at Ohio State and was a starter in 166 of the 169 games in which he played. Swisher, a first-team All-Big Ten selection both as a sophomore and junior, batted .348, third best on the team, with a team-best 52 RBI and 10 home runs in 2002.
All three of the major college baseball polls also were released this week. Ohio State did not make the top 25 in any of the polls, but received votes (33rd) in the final USA Today Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll.
