Baeball Falls to Detroit in Game One of Doubleheader – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Detroit’s Juston Davenport went 3-for-4 with one RBI and scored two runs helping lead the Titans to a 6-4 victory over Ohio State in the home opener Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium.
Ohio State (6-2-1) scored one run in the second inning. Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, OhioAlexander) tripled to score Terry Pettorini (So., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) who reached with a walk and then stole second.
The Buckeyes added a pair of runs in the third inning Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) tripled to lead off the inning. He scored on a grounder by Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) to short. Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio/South Central) walked and then Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) singled to left field, advancing to second on an error. by the centerfielder. Dendinger scored on the play to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead.
But the Titans (2-5) evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. Zak Voit and Juston Davenport singled to start the inning. Roger Wechter struck out and Davenport stole second. Voit scored on a throwing error by OSU catcher Joe Wilkins (Sr., Grove City, Ohio/Dublin Scioto). After another strikeout Poley singled to left where Rolston’s throw home was off the mark as Davenport came across the plate. Mike Mitrevski doubled to plate Davenport.
Ohio State got a run back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to the third home run of the season for Pettorini but the Titans went on to add three more runs. Detroit put two runs on the board in the board in the fifth inning thanks to three hits and a sacrifice. Voit scored in the seventh on a double by Davenport for the final Jason Horvat got the win for Detroit to improve to 1-1 on the year. Horvat pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) off seven hits. Omar Diaz picked up his first save in 1/3 of an inning, while Ohio State’s Josh Newman (So., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) got his first loss of the season to fall to 2-1. He pitched all seven innings allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits.
Pettorini was the offensive leader for Ohio State in going 2-for-3 with one RBI. He scored two runs for the Buckeyes.
This was the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. The two teams will close out the three-game series with a single game Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
