%^$ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico used big innings in the sixth and seventh, scoring eight and 10 runs respectively, to hand No. 25 Ohio State its first loss of the season, 22-2, Sunday at Lobo Field. The Buckeyes are now 6-1-1 on the year.%^$
%^$It was a pitchers dual until the the Buckeye scored first in the fifth. Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) led off the inning with a base hit to right-center field. Terry Pettorini (So., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) struckout and then Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio/Alexander) doubled down the left field line, moving Snavely to third. New Mexico starter Jeremy DeYapp hit Joe Wilkins (Sr., Grove City, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) to load the bases and then Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) flew out to centerfield, a sacrifice that scored Snavely. Anderson batted in the second run of the inning with a base hit to short centerfield. Rolston scored, but Wilkins was thrown out at the plate.%^$
%^$Prior to the fifth inning, the Buckeyes had just four base runners on a total of two hits. Ohio State left just one runner stranded as the Lobos were aided with two double plays.%^$
%^$New Mexico threatened early advancing a runner to third in each of the first two innings. The Lobos left Troy Cairns at third in the first and then the Buckeyes threw out Josh Mader at home in the second on an attempted sacrifice by Donny Sevieri. The Lobos had just one baserunner until the sixth inning, when they scored eight runs to take an 8-2 lead.%^$
%^$Cairns reached on a single threw the left side. Lovato then homer to right-center field one batter later to tie the game 2-2. New Mexico went on to add six more runs on a total of eight hits – five singles, one double, one triple and one home run – and one Buckeye error in the inning.%^$
%^$New Mexico continued its assault on Ohio State relief pitching in the seventh, scoring 10 runs off nine hits. The Lobo highlight of the inning was a grand slam by Seveiri.%^$
%^$Cairns was 4-for-6 to lead the offensive attack for New Mexico. He batted in four runs and scored three times. Chris Alexander was 3-for-5 with four RBI. For Ohio State, only Rolston had multiple hits. He was 2-for-3. Garrard and Anderson accounted for the two Buckeye runs.%^$
%^$De Yapp got the win for the Lobos to improve to 2-1 on the year while Scott Lewis (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington Court House) got the loss for Ohio State to fall to 1-1. DeYapp pitched 8.0 innings giving up two runs, both earned, on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked four.%^$
%^$Ohio State will open its home portion of the schedule next weekend at Bill Davis Stadium with a three-game series against Detroit. The Buckeyes and Titans will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:05 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.%^$
