Baseball Dominates Fairleigh Dickinson, 14-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

BRADENTON, Fla. – At 7 a.m., the Ohio State baseball team (10-4-1 overall) arrived at Wynn Field on the campus of Manatee Community College only to find it unplayable after overnight showers. The Buckeyes returned to their hotel and after a two-hour delay, were redirected for Lakewood Ranch High School to face the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (1-6 overall). OSU quickly let out all of its collective aggression about the early wake up by clobbering the Knights, 14-2. The Buckeyes jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. OSU starting pitcher Kyle Brown (So., Washington Court House, Ohio) earned the win (1-0) after throwing a scheduled three innings and keeping the Knights hitless.
“Not getting a chance to complete the no-hitter doesn’t bother me at all,” Brown said. “The most important thing is that we got the win and that a lot of guys were able to play and contribute.”
The slaughter began in the bottom half of the first inning as OSU scored 14 runs on seven hits and batted around the order twice. Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio) did the most damage with a grand slam off FDU starting pitcher Joe Gorgoglione. Nick Swisher (So., Parkersburgh, W.Va) drove in a pair of runs off a double and six other Buckeyes drove in at least one run.
FDU added its runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.
“I was just trying to make contact,” Deeds said. “He threw me a curveball and I didn’t think it had a chance to go out because of the way the winds were swirling.”
Tournament rules stopped the game after five innings because OSU had more than a 10-run lead.
Gorgolione (0-1) took the loss. He went one inning, gave up seven hits, 14 runs, walked seven and recorded one strikeout.
Tomorrow the Buckeyes continue their Spring Break trip with a game against Fairleigh Dickinson 7:30 p.m., at Wynn Field.
