The Gray Takes Game Two of the Scarlet and Gray Baseball World Series – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After spending last season recovering from shoulder surgery, Ohio State pitcher Nate Smith (Jr., Bryan, Ohio) returned to the mound in strong fashion to lead the Gray squad to a 13-2 win over the Scarlet in game two of the 2001 Scarlet and Gray World Series. Smith picked up the win after going five innings, giving up two runs and recording seven strikeouts. With the win, the series is tied at two.
“It’s nice to get out there and compete,” Smith said. “I had good command of my pitches and I feel good about my arm strength.”
The Scarlet took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind.) lined a double to the left field alley. Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio) followed with a single to leftfield to plate Garrard. The offense continued when Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio) fired a triple to leftfield to score Deeds and give the Scarlet a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of inning, the Gray squad answered quickly. With two outs, Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio) reached base on a single and then stole second base. Terry Pettorini (So., Wooster, Ohio) followed with a double to bring home Snavely. Pettorini would score later on a wild pitch and error to tie the game at two.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Gray took the lead on a solo home run by Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.).
In the bottom of the third inning, the Gray took a 7-2 lead. Josh Newman (So., Wheelersburg, Ohio) drove in a run on a double. Later in the inning, Geoff Buchanon (Fr., Camarillo, Calif.) drove in a pair of runs on a two-run double. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Derek Kinnear (So., Ironton, Ohio) led off with a single and later scored on a double by Pettorini. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Gray added another run when Buchanon scored on a double by Anderson. The run gave the Gray a commanding 9-2 lead.
Scarlet starting pitcher Kyle Brown (Jr., Washington Court House, Ohio) took the loss. He went four innings and gave up five earned run.
The series continues tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
