Turner’s Two Home Runs Leads Baseball Over Shawnee State, 9-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After opening the season with 22 games on the road, the entire Ohio State baseball team (16-7 overall) was excited to open the home season. And nobody showed it more then co-captain Jason Turner (Sr., Versailles, Ohio) as he connected for his second career two-home run game as the Buckeyes defeated Shawnee State (20-3 overall), 9-3, in front of 989 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Buckeyes took a 3-0 lead. Turner led off by taking a 2-2 offering from Shawnee State starting pitcher Chad Fyffe over the rightfield wall for his seventh home run of the season. Doug Dendinger (So., Greenwich, Ohio) immediately followed with a walk and then moved to third on a single by Trent McIlvain (Jr., Louisville, Ohio). Dendinger then scored on a grounder to SSU third baseman Brian Harrison by Jason Driscoll (Sr., Middlefield, Ohio) to give OSU a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, OSU added its final run of the inning when Driscoll scored on a grounder to Fyffe by Chris Alvord (Jr., Mentor, Ohio).
The long ball continued to haunt the Bears in the bottom half of the third inning. Chad Ehrnsberger (Jr., Kalida, Ohio) led off with a double to leftfield. Then on a 1-0 offering from SSU reliever Gary Doubrava, Turner blasted his second home run of the evening to stretch the OSU lead to 5-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, Shawnee State rallied for three runs on three hits. Jason Pratt hit a two-run double and Brian Harrison scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Buringrud.
The Buckeyes added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Alvord scored on a single by Ehrnsberger. Mike Check (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio) then scored on a walk by Turner. John Mayor (Jr., Chesterfield, Mo.) added another run when he scored on a groundout by Dendinger. Ehrnsberger scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by McIlvain to give OSU its 9-3 edge.
In his first career start, Kyle Brown (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio) tossed three shutout innings on 32 pitches, gave up just one hit and struck out two to earn his first career win (1-0). SSU’s Fyffe (5-1) took the loss by giving up three runs in two innings.
This weekend, the Buckeyes open the Big Ten season when they play host to Iowa in a four-game series at Bill Davis Stadium. Friday’s game begins at 6:35 p.m.
