COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by a commanding pitching performance from Kevin Goodrum (Sr., Mentor, Ohio) and an offensive explosion led by Jason Siler (Fr., Englewood, Colo.) the Scarlet defeated the Gray, 13-2, in game one of the Scarlet and Gray World Series at Bill Davis Stadium. Goodrum earned a complete game victory after giving up just one run and striking out five in nine innings of work. Siler, a red-shirt freshman, went 4-for-5 with a double and six runs batted in.
“It’s tough pitching to a team after they’ve seen you nearly everyday for the past four weeks,” Goodrum said. “But the run support I got made it a lot easier for me to just go out and throw some good pitches. This series is far from over but we’ve sent a message to the Gray team that we mean business.”
In the top of the third inning, the Scarlet Buckeyes took a 4-0 lead. With one out, Nick Swisher (So., Parkersburgh, W.Va.) lined a single to center field. Doug Dendinger (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio) and Josh Newman (Fr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) immediately followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. On a 1-1 offering from Gray starting pitcher E.J. Laratta (Jr., Englewood, Colo.), catcher Joe Wilkins (Grove City, Ohio) lined a double to right-center field to score Swisher and Dendinger. Siler then singled to center to clear the bases and give the Scarlet the first lead of the ballgame.
The Scarlet added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Swisher led off with a walk and later scored on two out single by Siler. The Gray added their first run of the afternoon in the bottom half of the inning. Terry Pettorini (Fr., Wooster, Ohio) led off with a single to center field. Two batters later, he advanced to third base on a double by Chris Alvord (Sr., Mentor, Ohio). Then with two outs in the inning, Christian Snavely (F.r, Defiance, Ohio) grounded a ball that was mishandled by Dendinger at first baseman. The error allowed Pettorini to score and cut the Scarlet lead, 5-1. In the top of the sixth inning, the Scarlet added another run on a two out, RBI single by Swisher to score Mike Rabin (Fr., West Chester, Ohio).
In the top of the seventh inning, the Scarlet added three more runs to increase their lead to 9-1. Siler hammered a one-run double and Steve Caravati (Fr., Dover, Ohio) added a two-run double to account for the three runs.
The hit parade continued in the top of the eighth for the Scarlet. They added four runs on three hits to increase their lead to a commanding, 13-1.
Laratta (0-1) took the loss for the Gray. He went the six innings, gave up 11 hits, six runs, walked four and recorded two strikeouts.
Tomorrow, the two teams resume the best-of-five game series with game two at 3 p.m.
