COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Gray squad brought the World Series to 1-1-1 tie with a 12-5 thumping of the Scarlet on a chilly (55 degrees) autumn Wednesday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.
Former Buckeye assistant coach Vince Chickarelli took in tonight’s game from the pressbox. Chickarelli assisted skipper Marty Karow for six years and was part of the staff that brought home OSU’s only baseball national championship in 1966.
As they had in the previous two contests, the Scarlet went on top first, scoring once in the second inning. Chad Ehrnsberger (So., Kalida, Ohio) led off with a single that skipped down the third base line. Jason Turner (Jr., Versailles, Ohio) then cranked a double off the wall in left centerfield, driving in the game’s first run.
Turner eventually moved to third on a fielder’s choice but never scored as freshman starter Greg Larrick (North Canton, Ohio) retired three Scarlet Buckeyes in a row.
Kalnins walked John Mayor (So., Chesterfield, Mo.) to lead off the bottom of the fourth, giving the Gray a man on with no outs. Mayor advanced to second on Mike Lockwood’s (Jr., Powell, Ohio) single to right field but was gunned down at third by a laser beam from Turner. Tom Durant (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) stepped to the plate and belted his third homerun of the series over the left field wall, giving the Gray a 2-1 lead.
The Scarlet squad jumped right back in the game, knotting the score at two apiece. Jason Driscoll (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio) legged out his second double of the day and scored when Jason Trott (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) pounded Larrick’s first offering deep to centerfield for a double.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Gray broke the game wide open with a monster seven-run inning. With two out, freshman walk-on Brian DiBacco (Warren, Ohio) walked and moved to second when Mayor reached on an error by Joe Palazzo (Fr., Tucson, Ariz). Kalnins gave four free passes in the inning and a pair of home runs. Doug Dendinger (Greenwich, Ohio) smacked a grand slam and Marcello Garofalo (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) followed with a solo shot, giving the Gray a 9-2 lead. After giving up to more runs in the sixth, Kalnins gave way to Cory Cox (So., Chillicothe, Ohio) who recorded the final two outs of the inning and struck out the side in the seventh and gave up one run in the eighth.
Trott got back two runs in the top of the seventh, homering to right field, bringing in Driscoll who had walked. Larrick gave way to Greg Prenger (Fr., Harpster, Ohio) who allowed Turner to score in the inning when Palazzo doubled.
Game four takes place Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.
