COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Scarlet and Gray squads took turns pounding each other in game two of the World Series, playing to a 12-12 tie, Tuesday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium.
Mike Check (So., Bay Village, Ohio) was hit by Nate Smith (Bryan, Ohio) to open the bottom of the first for the Scarlet, stole second and scored when Jason Trott (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) singled, giving the home squad a 1-0 lead. The Scarlet tacked on another run in the second when Smith walked the bases full and Joe Palazzo (Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) scored when Check legged out an infield single.
With two out in the bottom of the third, Jason Turner (Jr., Versailles, Ohio) doubled off the centerfield wall and crossed the plate when Palazzo singled to give the Scarlet a 3-0 lead.
Tom Durant (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) broke Scarlet starter Kurt Fullenkamp’s (Minster, Ohio) no-hitter in the top of the fourth with a two-run homerun to left field. Mike Lockwood (Jr., Powell, Ohio) came home on the play after reaching on four balls. The Gray took the lead in the fifth, scoring a pair of unearned runs after an error by Scarlet second baseman Trevor Vaught (Fr., Canton, Ohio).
Freshman walk-on Brian DiBacco (Warren, Ohio) took Fullenkamp deep for the second time in the game in the top of the sixth, pushing the Gray lead to 6-3. Trent McIlvain (So., Louisville, Ohio) scored on the round tripper after reaching on a fielder’s choice with two outs.
Gray center fielder Lockwood led of the seventh inning with a single and came home on Durant’s second home run of the day. The squad pushed its lead to 9-3 when Doug Deninger (Fr., Greenwich, Ohio) walked and scored on a single by Todd Calcamuggio (So., Toledo, Ohio). The Scarlet Buckeyes awoke from their slumber in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs when Smith gave up two singles and a walk to start the innning and gave way to Brandon Steen (Fr., Hendersonville, Texas) who gave up a single and a double before getting out of the inning.
The Gray squad came right back in the top of the eighth, scoring three times to take a 12-6 lead. Four Scarlet unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth brought the contest to a one run ball game and Jason Driscoll (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio) scored the game-tying run on a double steal in the bottom of the ninth. The Buckeyes played one extra innning before the game was called.
Game three takes place Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.
