COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kirby Pellant, who spent the 2019 season as Ohio State’s quality control coordinator, has been named the Buckeyes’ volunteer assistant coach, head coach Greg Beals announced Friday. Pellant, who played two seasons for the Buckeyes from 2012-13, helped the Buckeyes to an NCAA Regional appearance and Big Ten Tournament title in 2019.
“I am very excited to have Kirby back in uniform for the Buckeyes,” Beals said. “Kirby brings great baseball insight plus an energy and passion for both the game and Ohio State University. Kirby will work directly with the infielders on defense while serving as the first base coach on offense. Kirby Pellant complements our coaching staff well and is a great addition.”
Pellant, who was the Buckeyes’ student assistant coach during the 2015 campaign, was a 2013 first team All-Big Ten selection, betting .301 during his senior season with 20 runs scored, five doubles, three triples, two home runs, 15 RBI and 11 walks. He also had a. 991 fielding percentage in the Buckeye infield. In two seasons, Pellant swiped 43 stolen bases, which ranks 11th in program history. His 31 stolen bases during the 2012 season ranks sixth in the OSU record book.
“I’m grateful to be in the position to help our student-athletes on and off the field,” Pellant said. “My goal is to construct relationships, build character and continue to raise the bar for Buckeye baseball. I can’t thank Coach Beals and the University enough for this opportunity. It has been my home since the first day I stepped on campus in 2011 and I’m excited to continue to help this program and its student-athletes succeed.”
Pellant was drafted in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and played in 46 professional games. A native of Chandler, Ariz., Pellant graduated from Ohio State in 2015 with a degree in criminology.
