COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State dropped a 7-5 decision to Michigan State Sunday in the final game of a four-game Big Ten series at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Buckeyes are 28-15 on the year and 12-10 in the Big Ten. The Spartans improved to 18-23 and 9-14 in conference play. Ohio State won game one of the series, 8-4, Friday, before losing games two, 5-1, and three, 6-4, Saturday. OSU remains at home Tuesday and Wednesday for a pair of non-conference games vs. Western Carolina. Tuesday’s game is at 6:35 p.m. followed by a 1:05 p.m. start Wednesday.
Ohio State took an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) nursed a two-out walk and then stole second base. Chris Macke (Jr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The Spartans tied the game at 1-all with a run in the top of the fifth and then exploded for six additional runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-1 lead.
The Buckeyes got one run back in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-2. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) and Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) hit back to back doubles with one out to score the OSU run.
In the bottom of the seventh, OSU cut further into the Michigan State lead by scoring three runs. Jacob Howell (Sr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started the rally by getting hit by a pitch with one out. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) singled, and after a strikeout, Macke walked to load the bases. Miller followed with a three-run double down the left field line to clear the bases and make it 7-5. But that was as close as the Buckeyes would come.
J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) started on the mound for the Buckeyes and went 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits. He walked three and struck out six, falling to 3-2 on the season. Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) relieved Shuck with two outs in the fifth and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and walked three.
Kyle Corcoran started the game for MSU and went 6.2 innings, earning his first win of the year. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and walked four. A.J. Dunn threw 0.2 innings and surrendered one earned run. Chris Cullen pitched a scoreless eighth for the Spartans and Mike Monterey threw the ninth, picking up his seventh save of the season.
Ohio State had nine hits in the game and Michigan State 12. Miller was 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI.
