Ohio State Falls Short in Opening Day of Mizuno Classic

The Buckeyes will rematch with both Delaware and Virginia Saturday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State softball (5-6) dropped its two opening games of the Mizuno Classic in Charlottesville, Va., falling 2-0 to Delaware and 8-4 to No. 21 Virginia.
The day would still see two home runs, one by Sami Bewick and one by Hailey Lang, each coming in the sixth inning against Virginia. Both Lang and Bewick would go 2-for-3 against the Cavaliers, each with two RBI. Abbie Wilhelm would land Ohio State's lone hit against Delaware, going 2-for-6 total on the day with two doubles.
The Buckeyes will look to get back in the win column Saturday with rematches slated against both Delaware and Virginia. They'll face Delaware at 11 a.m. and Virginia at 1:30 p.m.

How it Happened - Delaware 2, Ohio State 0
- After two innings in an offensive stalemate, Delaware scored the first run of the game with a two-out Sydney Shaffer solo home run.
- Delaware added to their lead in the fifth inning when Maddie Diamond doubled to left center to bring in their second and final run.
- The Buckeyes would threaten in the sixth, getting Abbie Wilhelm to third with the tying run at the plate, but were not able to capitalize on the runner. Wilhelm was one of four base runners stranded in the contest.
- Despite getting the loss, Lorin Boutte (1-1) would record a season-best eight strikeouts in her first complete game of the season. Her two runs allowed were the fewest she's had in a start this year.
- The Buckeyes jumped in front of Virginia in the first inning with a Sami Bewick RBI double that scored Taylor Cruse.
- Virginia tied the game at one apiece with a sac fly hit by Hannah Weismer that scored Kelsey Hackett. Alex Call then stole home to give Virginia the 2-1 lead to end the second inning.
- Jade Hylton added to the Virginia lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI double that scored Jaiden Griffith. Hylton then scored on a Kassidy Hudson RBI single, which was followed up by a Macee Eaton two run home run that had the Cavaliers on top 6-1 heading into the sixth.
- Ohio State would gain some ground in the bottom half of the sixth, plating three runs via home runs by Bewick and Hailey Lang, respectively.
- Virginia retook two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run by Hylton that scored Griffith, giving the Cavaliers their winning 8-4 lead.
- Jenna Molk (2-3) got the loss in the contest, going 4.1 innings while allowing five earned runs and seven hits. She was relieved by Kennedy Kay, who allowed two earned runs over her 1.2 innings pitched.
