A Note on the Competition
- Delaware travels to Charlottesville 4-8 on the year. Delaware was also in the Paradise Classic with Ohio State in week one of the season, but the two teams did not matchup. The Blue Hens are hitting .275 as a team, with Sydney Shaffer holding the leading batting average of .419. Shaffer is among four total Delaware hitters with an average above .300. Josie Crossman leads the Blue Hens in the circle with an ERA of 4.78 and 24 strikeouts. Delaware will face Maryland before facing the Buckeyes, marking the first-ever meeting between these two programs.
- The hosting Virginia Cavaliers hold a 7-1 record thus far, with their lone loss coming to No. 8 Arkansas. UVA is ranked No. 21 in this week's NFCA Top 25 poll and No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. The Cavaliers will face off with another Big Ten foe, Maryland, twice before facing Ohio State. Virginia made an appearance in the NCAA Columbia Regional in 2025, finishing with a 38-19 record while going 14-10 in ACC play. The Cavaliers have outscored opponents 55-25 this season, hitting .335 compared to an allowed average of .195. Senior pitcher Courtney Layne leads the pitching stable, with three runs and an ERA of .036 that is good for third best in both the ACC and nation.
- Liberty University enters week three of the 2026 season 2-8. Those losses include No. 1 Tennessee, No.14 Oregon, No. 24 Clemson, No. 7 Florida State, and No. 9 Alabama. Liberty's two wins each came over Georgia Southern. Ella Fox, hitting .333 with eight runs scored, leads a Flame's roster that is hitting .230 collectively. Liberty entered the season ranked No. 21/23, following a 50-15 2025 that earned them NFCA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coaching Staff of the Year laurels and an appearance in the Eugene Super-Regional. The Flames took down a then-top-ranked Texas A&M squad twice in that postseason run.
