Ohio State finishes its weekend tomorrow at 11 a.m. vs. Liberty
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The second day of Ohio State's weekend at the Mizuno Classic on the campus of the University Virginia resulted in a split, as the Buckeyes (6-7) downed Delaware (6-9) in five innings, 11-2, and lost to No. 21 Virginia (11-1), 8-0.
Ohio State will look to finish its trip to Charlottesville on a winning note tomorrow morning as it tangles with Liberty at 11 a.m. Live stats for the game will be available on the softball schedule page at OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
In the Buckeyes' triumph over Delaware to start the day, Ohio State's offense had three home runs from three different players and a combined six RBI by Kiki Estrada and Emma Tolley. Freshman Jenna Molk tossed a two-hitter while allowing just one earned run.
How It Happened – Ohio State 11, Delaware 2 (5 inn.)
- Lottie Landmesser put Ohio State on top in the second inning, sending a double to right that scored Skylar Limon. Sami Bewick then added to the lead with the bases loaded, singling to bring in Landmesser and Taylor Cruse to give Ohio Sate a 3-0 lead.
- The Buckeyes did the majority of their offensive damage in the top of the third inning, as they scored eight runs on six hits, highlighted by homers from Emma Tolley, Kiki Estrada and Sara Tarr. The home runs from Tolley and Estrada were three-run shots.
- Seven of Ohio State's nine starters registered hits in the game. The Buckeyes also worked seven walks off of three different Delaware pitchers.
- The three RBI from Tolly and Estrada were both career highs.
- Jenna Molk won her team-leading third game of the year, as her stat line included just two hits allowed, one earned run and six strikeouts.
- Eight of the 11 runs that Ohio State scored came with two outs, including seven in the decisive eight-run third inning.
How It Happened – Virginia 8, Ohio State 0 (5 inn.)
- The homestanding Cavaliers started fast, scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning on an infield single, bases loaded walk and two-out, two-run double.
- UVA then loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning but scored just once, as Kennedy Kay came into the game in relief and recorded the final two outs of the inning.
- Kay found a groove in the middle of the game, retiring eight consecutive Virginia batters between the end of the second and fourth innings.
- In the fifth, UVA hit two home runs to end the game.
- The Buckeyes' two hits in the game came from the bottom of their lineup: a double in the fourth inning by Skylar Limon and an infield single from Izzy Neal in the second inning.
