Ohio State wins games one 10-3 and game two 13-4 in six innings
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team did what it does best in a doubleheader sweep of Purdue on Saturday: find ways to score runs. Those runs led to a 10-3 victory in the first game and then a 13-4 six-inning triumph in the nightcap. Ohio State is now 40-10-1 (13-5 Big Ten) on the season while Purdue is 26-19 (8-10 Big Ten).
After falling behind early in both games, the Buckeyes rallied to reach the 40-win mark for the first time since 2009. The wins brought their current streak to nine games and gave Ohio State another Big Ten series win.
Game One – Ohio State 10, Purdue 3
- Purdue took an early 3-0 lead before Ohio State even came to the plate, as the Boilermakers scored three in the top of the first on a sac-fly and an error.
- The Buckeyes start to chip away at the Boilermaker lead with a sac fly off the bat of Taylor Cruse and a Hadley Parisien RBI double in the third inning, bringing the score to 3-2.
- The score was tied at 3-3 in the fourth inning when Cruse brought in Morgan Frye for a second time with another sac fly.
- In the fifth inning, the Buckeyes took their first lead of the game via a throwing error that scored pinch runner Lottie Landmesser. That play was followed by a bases loaded Skylar Limon walk that put Ohio State up two. Then, with two outs, Cruse narrowly missed a grand slam, sending a bases clearing triple off the right field wall for her fifth RBI of the day and putting the Buckeyes up 8-3.
- Kaitlyn Farley added to the lead in the sixth with a long, bases loaded sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Tanaya Barrett. It was followed by Limon's second bases loaded walk of the day to score Kami Kortokrax and put the Buckeyes in double digits by a score of 10-3.
- Pitcher Lorin Boutté got the start and the win, going the distance with four strikeouts, allowing one earned run on four hits. Boutté improved her season record to 17-7 with the win.
- Madi Elish got the start for Purdue, but it was Kendall Klochack who would record the loss, bringing her record to 7-5.
Game Two – Ohio State 13, Purdue 4 (6 inn.)
- As it did in the first game, Purdue struck first, with a solo home run off the bat of Julia Gossett in the second inning.
- This time, Ohio State wasted no time in responding. Morgan Frye sent a towering home run to left center, scoring both Kaitlyn Farley and Sami Bewick. She was followed two batters later by Hadley Parisien, who sent a shot of her to right field, scoring Limon and bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of the Buckeyes.
- Purdue cut the lead to three in the third inning on a Moriah Polar RBI single.
- In the fourth inning, the Buckeyes built their lead back to four runs thanks to a Taylor Cruse bases-loaded walk.
- Cruse continued her banner day into the fifth inning. She narrowly missed clearing the center field wall again, but took matters into her own hands by legging out an inside the park home run that scored Skylar Limon and put Ohio State up 8-3.
- In the sixth, Purdue cut into the Ohio State lead with an RBI double off the bat of Kyndall Bailey, yet the score remained 8-4.
- Never to be outdone, Kami Kortokrax swung the Buckeyes into double digits with a three-run home runs, the fourth by the Ohio State offense in the game.
- Three batters later, Morgan Frye ended the game early, crushing a two-run home run to right field that brought the score to 13-4 and ended the contest via run rule.
- Kennedy Kay got the start and the win for the Buckeyes, going the duration of the game whilst allowing four runs and striking out three.
Buckeye This and That
- Boutté's win in the first game gave her the second most wins among freshman pitchers in program history. The record sits at 21, set by Melanie Nichols in 2010.
- Hadley Parisien extended her on-base streak to the last 11 games. Her 18 home runs this season are currently tied for third most in the Big Ten.
- Morgan Frye's second-inning home run was her 10th of the season, becoming the seventh Buckeye on the roster with double-digit home runs this season.
- Skylar Limon went 4-4 on the day, improving her average to .392, which is the second-highest mark on the team. Limon is 12 for her last 20, reaching safely in seven of the last eight games.
- Taylor Cruse recorded eight RBI on the day. Her five in the first game made for a season high.
- Kaitlyn Farley extended her on base streak to the last nine games.
What's Next
The Buckeyes will close out their regular season home schedule tomorrow at 1pm in a sold-out series finale against Purdue. There will be a pre-game ceremony to celebrate seniors Kami Kortokrax, Morgan Frye and Kaitlyn Farley that will begin at approximately 12:40 p.m.
