Game Recap
- The Hawkeyes took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning following a two-run home run, two RBI singles and an RBI double.
- In the top of the second, Mason Eckelman led off with a long ball, sending one 398 feet over the center field wall to put the Buckeyes on the board. Ryan Miller followed Eckelman at the plate and he also went yard, blasting it 411 feet out of the park to cut the Hawkeye lead to three, 5-2.
- In the top of the third, Trey Lipsey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Lipsey stole second and then advanced to third on an error by the Iowa catcher. A single into right field from Lee Ellis sent Lipsey home and left the Buckeyes trailing by just two runs, 5-3.
- Iowa got three runs across in the bottom of the third to get back ahead by five, 8-3.
- Miller singled up the middle to lead off the fourth inning for the Buckeyes. With one out, Will Carpenter and Reggie Bussey drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Ellis hit a two-out single to left field, driving in two runs to cut the Iowa lead back to three, 8-5.
- In the bottom of the fifth, a hit by pitch with bases loaded, two bases-loaded walks and an RBI groundout sent four more runs home for the Hawkeyes to put them ahead, 12-5.
- With two outs on the board in the top of the sixth inning, Bussey was walked and then stole second. Lipsey reached base after being hit by another pitch and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but they were stranded.
- In the top of the seventh with two outs, Eckelman and Miller were both hit by pitches to get on base, but they were both left there.
- Lipsey reached base again in the top of the eighth, getting hit by a pitch for the third time.
- The Buckeyes were retired in order in the top of the ninth and Iowa came away with the 12-5 victory and series win.
- Ellis and Miller led the Buckeyes in hits with two each.
- Ellis had a team-high three RBIs.
- Blaine Wynk (0-1) took the loss. He struck out two and gave up five runs on four hits in 0.2 innings pitched.
- Gavin Kuzniewski fanned a career-high three in 3.1 innings of relief.
- Drew Erdmann struck out two and did not allow any runs in 3.2 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes and Hawkeyes close out their three-game series on Sunday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. CT/2:00 p.m. ET.
