Buckeyes hit four home runs and finish with nine extra base hits
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fans of offense got all they could want and more on Saturday, as the Ohio State softball team outlasted Nebraska, 13-12, on the strength of four home runs and a two-run sixth inning. The Buckeyes improved their overall record to 19-6-1 and also evened their Big Ten record at 1-1. Nebraska is now 20-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The Short Story
Ohio State and Nebraska, which entered the weekend as the top two offensive teams in the Big Ten, showed why on Saturday. The Buckeyes and Cornhuskers combined for 25 runs, 25 hits and each hit four home runs.
Trailing 6-2, Ohio State scored nine times in the third inning and then twice in the sixth to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 13-12 lead. Hadley Parisien delivered what proved to be the winning hit, a two-out single to right field that scored Morgan Frye and broke a 12-12 tie.
The Buckeyes' 12-hit attack was keyed by Reagan Milliken, who went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI, and Sami Bewick, who was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. Freshman Layna Gerhard was the winning pitcher, going 3.2 innings in relief and recorded the final out on a called strike.
How It Happened
- The Buckeyes scored single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, respectively, to take an early 2-0 lead. Nebraska, however, responded with a six-run third inning to go ahead 6-2. They rally was keyed by a two-run home run off the bat of Jordy Bahl.
- Undaunted, the Buckeyes put together a nine-spot in the bottom of the third inning. Milliken homered twice in the inning and Bewick also hit one out. The biggest non-home run of the inning was a three-run bases clearing double by Taylor Cruse.
- Eight of the nine runs that Ohio State scored in the inning came off of Nebraska pitcher Jordy Bahl, who had an 11-3 record with over 100 strikeouts already this season entering today.
- The Cornhuskers scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a Emmerson Cope two-run home run and then retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning with four runs.
- Training 12-11 entering the bottom of the sixth, Ohio State tied the game on a Cruse sacrifice fly and then went ahead 13-12 on Parisien's two-out single to right field. It was her second hit of the game and fifth of the weekend.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Gerhard retired Nebraska in order. The final out of the game via strikeout came against Cope, who had homered in her last two at-bats.
Buckeye This and That
- Seven different players recorded hits on Saturday. Bewick, Parisien and Milliken each notched multi-hit games.
- Nine of the Buckeyes' 12 hits were for extra bases. Ohio State finished with four home runs and five doubles.
- The four home runs give Ohio State 52 on the season and an average of 2.0 per game.
- The start time of Saturday's game was moved up two hours do to expected inclement weather later in the day. A crowed of 876 filled Buckeye Field; it was the fourth time in the last five home games that 800 or more fans have filled the stadium.
What's Next
Ohio State's series with Nebraska concludes tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game at Buckeye Field. It will not, however, count in the conference standings and instead be considered a non-conference game.
