The Short Story
Virginia, making only its third regular season visit to Columbus and first since 2012, scored 36 seconds into the game to take a quick, 1-0, lead. Ohio State countered 50 seconds later with Garrett Haas scoring unassisted for his 11th score of the season.
Ohio State kept the pressure on the Cavaliers the rest of the half, finishing with a 21-16 advantage on shots and tallying two more times. Griffin Turner scored unassisted at the 10:54 mark of the first quarter and then Jack McKenna tallied the only goal of the second quarter, just 22 seconds in, to give Ohio State a 3-1 lead that would stand until halftime.
Three goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter extended Ohio State's lead to 6-1 and sent a charge through the crowd … but also ignited the Cavaliers, who would follow up with three goals in 79 seconds to get to within 6-4 with 7:10 to play in the third quarter.
Ohio State regrouped, stopped the Cavaliers' run at that point and tallied four consecutive goals to close the third quarter with a 10-4 advantage.
The first goal of the fourth quarter was Ohio State's and the team then cruised to the victory, its second ever over Virginia in the 10-game series, from that point on.

How it Happened
- Ohio State grew that 3-1 halftime lead to 10-4 in the third quarter.
- Ohio State's defense held Virginia scoreless and without a goal for nearly 36 minutes following their quick score to start the game.
- Blake Eiland, Shane O'Leary and Ryan Donnery all scored within the first five minutes of the third to give the Buckeyes their 6-1 advantage.
- Virginia responded, though, and in a big way by tallying three consecutive goals to get to within 6-4.
- O'Leary then scored possibly the biggest goal of the game, off an assist from Ed Shean, at the 5:27 mark to stop the Virginia run and re-energize the Buckeyes with a 7-4 lead.
- Goals by Donnery, Haas and Jack Oldman followed and gave the Buckeyes a six-goal advantage with one quarter to play.
- Haas and Oldman's goals stunners, coming eight seconds apart and inside of 17 seconds to play and extending the lead to 10-4 entering the fourth.
- Ohio State tallied four more times in the fourth to put the game away. Turner, Ben Mayer, O'Leary and Donnery all found the back of the net and the Buckeyes had their biggest win of the 2025 campaign to date.
