
Ohio State Defeats Northwestern Saturday to Win Series

Game Recap
- The Buckeyes opened scoring in the bottom of the first inning, with Henry Kaczmar sending one out of the park to give Ohio State the early 1-0 lead. With two outs on the board, Tyler Pettorini doubled to right field. A single from Mitchell Okuley sent Pettorini home and a single from Joseph Mershon scored Okuley. Mershon scored on a Wildcat throwing error to give the Buckeyes a 4-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the second, with two runners on, Isaac Cadena went yard, hitting one over the right field wall to give the Buckeyes a commanding 7-0 lead over Northwestern.
- A solo home run from Ryan Miller in the bottom of the third frame put the Buckeyes ahead of the Wildcats, 8-0.
- With two outs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, Okuley and Mershon drew back-to-back walks. Miller stepped up to the plate next and he went yard for the second time, sending three runs across to give Ohio State an 11-0 lead.
- The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the fifth, cutting the Buckeyes lead to 11-3 after a three-run home run.
- A solo home run and an RBI double from the Wildcats in the top of the sixth left the Buckeyes ahead by six, 11-5.
- Pettorini led off with an infield single in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a single from Mershon. Pettorini scored on a wild pitch, Mershon scored on a Northwestern error and Miller, who had reached base on a walk, scored on a groundout from Trey Lipsey to put Ohio State in the lead by nine, 14-5.
- Northwestern scored one more run in the top of the ninth, getting one across on a Buckeye error, but the Buckeyes did not allow the Wildcats to score again as they secured the 14-6 victory and the series win.
- Miller led the Buckeyes with three hits and four RBIs.
- Pettorini, Okuley and Mershon each had two hits.
- Cadena batted in three runs.
- On the mound, Colin Purcell (3-4) earned the win. He struck out one and gave up five runs on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
- Zach Brown struck out two and did not allow any hits in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
- The Buckeyes and Wildcats wrap up their series on Sunday, May 12 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, Ohio State will honor the senior class. The group will add their names to the Letterman Wall at 12:15 p.m. and the on-field ceremony will begin at 12:29 p.m.
