Buckeyes Fall to Wildcats, 3-1, on Senior Day

Prior to the start of the game, Ohio State honored the class of 2024: Joseph Mershon, Justin Eckhardt, Tim Baird, Logan Jones, Mitchell Okuley, Colin Purcell, Jacob Morin, Hunter Rosson and Hank Thomas.
Game Recap
- Isaac Cadena had the first hit of the game for the Buckeyes, singling through the right side and then swiping second in the bottom of the first, but he was left on base.
- With two outs in the bottom of the second, Ryan Miller drew a walk, followed by a single to left field from Matthew Graveline. Josh Stevenson was next at the plate and he singled through the right side, scoring Miller to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
- Northwestern took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning, scoring on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
- In the bottom of the third, with two outs on the board, Tyler Pettorini was walked and Mitchell Okuley was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but both were stranded.
- A solo home run from the Wildcats in the top of the fourth extended their lead, 3-1, and would wind up being the final run scored in the game as the pitching staffs battled.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Graveline singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a balk, but he was left there.
- Henry Kaczmar drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Okuley doubled to left center. Joseph Mershon was then walked to load the bases, but the Buckeyes were not able to capitalize.
- Buckeye reliever Chase Herrell fanned two of three batters faced in the top of the sixth to keep the Wildcats off the board.
- Graveline led off with a single in the bottom of the sixth. A single from Trey Lipsey put two runners on base. Kaczmar grounded out for the second out of the inning, but both runners advanced into scoring position. The Wildcats, however, changed pitchers and got the third out to get out of the inning unscathed.
- Blaine Wynk retired the Wildcats in order in the eighth and the ninth, with three strikeouts over those two innings.
- The Buckeyes went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, falling to the Wildcats, 3-1.
- Graveline led the Buckeyes at the plate with three hits.
- Stevenson had one RBI.
- Gavin DeVooght (2-3) took the loss. He struck out six, tying his career-high, and allowed three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
- Herrell struck out two in 1.0 clean inning of work.
- Wynk fanned three and allowed just one hit in 3.0 scoreless inning.
- The Buckeyes close out the regular season with a three-game series at Rutgers May 16-18.
