Buckeyes Defeat Iowa in Series-Opener, Win Fourth Straight Game

Game Recap
- The Buckeyes struck first, getting on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Joseph Mershon led off with a single to first base and then stole second. With one out on the board, Nick Giamarusti stepped up to the plate and he went yard, sending the ball over the wall in right field to plate two runs and give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead over Iowa.
- Henry Kaczmar led off with a triple down the right field line in the bottom of the third inning. A double from Matthew Graveline sent Kaczmar home and gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead. With one out, Mershon singled through the left side, advancing Graveline to third base. On the next play, Mershon stole second and Graveline stole home to put the Buckeyes ahead, 4-0.
- The Hawkeyes got on the board in the top of the fourth frame with a lead-off solo home run to cut the Buckeye lead to three, 4-1.
- In the top of the fifth inning, the Hawkeyes got two more runs across on an RBI double and an RBI groundout to leave them trailing Ohio State by one, 4-3.
- Graveline drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Pettorini was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Mershon reached base on a fielder's choice and Graveline advanced to third to put runners on the corners for the Buckeyes. A single up the middle from Mitchell Okuley scored Graveline and gave the Buckeyes a two-run lead, 5-3. The bases were loaded after Giamarusti was hit by a pitch and Mershon scored on a wild pitch to put Ohio State back ahead by three, 6-3.
- A sacrifice fly from the Hawkeyes in the top of the sixth cut the Buckeye lead back to two, 6-4.
- With two outs on the board in the home half of the sixth, Pettorini singled to right field and then swiped the bag at second. A single from Mershon plated Pettorini and gave Ohio State back a three-run lead, 7-4.
- In the bottom of the eighth inning, Kaczmar led off with a single. With two outs and one runner on, Mershon smacked a double to left center, scoring Kaczmar to give Ohio State a four-run advantage, 8-4.
- The Hawkeyes plated one more run on an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the ninth to put the Ohio State lead back at three runs, 8-5, but the Buckeyes secured the next two outs and earned the victory.
- Mershon led the Buckeyes with a season-high four hits and three stolen bases.
- Kaczmar, Graveline and Giamarusti each had two hits.
- Mershon and Giamarusti each batted in two runs.
- Landon Beidelschies (4-5) earned the win on the mound. He fanned seven and allowed four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
- Blaine Wynk earned his first save of the season, striking out four and giving up one run on three hits in 3.1 innings tossed.
- The Buckeyes continue their series against Iowa April 13-14, taking on the Hawkeyes at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
