
Buckeyes Drop Defensive Battle to Iowa, 3-2

Game Recap
- After giving up a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning, southpaw Gavin Bruni fanned two and the Buckeyes caught a Hawkeye stealing to get out of the inning unscathed.
- In the bottom of the first, Trey Lipsey drew a walk and, with two outs, Tyler Pettorini hit an infield single, but both runners were left on base.
- The Hawkeyes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after scoring on catcher's interference. They extended their lead, 2-0, following a sacrifice fly.
- With two outs on the board in the bottom of the third frame, Henry Kaczmar went yard, sending one over the wall in center field to cut the Iowa lead in half, 2-1.
- Bruni struck out two out of three batters faced in the top of the fourth, catching them both looking.
- Pettorini hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the fourth and, with one out, Joseph Mershon was walked to put two runners on, but the Buckeyes were unable to score.
- In the top of the seventh, the Hawkeyes got back ahead by two, 3-1, after an RBI fielder's choice.
- The Buckeyes answered in the bottom of the seventh. Isaac Cadena led off the inning and he hit the first home run of his career, hitting the ball over the right field wall to put Ohio State back within one run of Iowa, 3-2.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Matthew Graveline singled to right field to lead off the inning and then stole second, but he was stranded.
- Cadena walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Nick Giamarusti stepped up to the plate next and placed a bunt just in front of home plate. CJ Richard, who pinch ran for Cadena, advanced to second and Giamarusti reached first on a throwing error from the Hawkeye pitcher that drew the first baseman off the bag. Pinch hitter Hunter Rosson placed a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to advance both runners into scoring position. The Hawkeyes, however, got the final two outs to come away with the one-run victory.
- Pettorini led the Buckeyes with two hits, while Cadena, Kaczmar and Graveline each added one.
- Kaczmar and Cadena each recorded one RBI.
- Bruni (2-2) took the loss on the mound. He fanned six and allowed two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
- The rubber game in the series between the Buckeyes and the Hawkeyes will take place on Sunday, April 14 at 12:00 p.m.
