Buckeyes Drop Series Opener at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Ohio State baseball team (6-5) fell to Cal Poly (5-7), 4-2, on Friday night in the opening game of the teams' four-game series.

- Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, with Landon Beidelschies fanning two of his three batters faced.
- In the top of the second, Nick Giamarusti led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on an error from the Mustangs. A groundout from Mitchell Okuley sent Giamarusti home to give the Buckeyes the lead, 1-0. Joseph Mershon also doubled in the inning and Nolan Farley was hit by a pitch to reach base, but the Mustangs held the Buckeyes to one run.
- Henry Kaczmar led off with a single in the top of the third frame and then swiped the bag at second. He advanced to third after Tyler Pettorini reached base on an error. With two outs on the board, Giamarusti stepped up to the plate and tripled, hitting the wall in center field and sending Kaczmar home to give the Buckeyes a two-run lead, 2-0.
- The score remained 2-0, with the Buckeyes ahead, until the bottom of the fifth inning, when two RBI singles and a score on an Ohio State throwing error put the Mustangs in the lead, 3-2.
- With one out on the board in the top of the sixth, Giamarusti drew a walk and advanced to third on a Mustang error, but he was stranded on base.
- Cal Poly added a run in the home half of the seventh inning to take a two-run lead, 4-2.
- Kaczmar and Giamarusti were both walked in the eighth, but the Mustangs held the Buckeyes off, and the score remained the same.
- Mershon singled up the middle to lead off the ninth inning, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes as they fell to the Mustangs, 4-2, in the series opener.
- Kaczmar, Giamarusti and Mershon combined for the Buckeyes' six hits on the night; each had two hits.
- Giamarusti and Okuley each had one RBI.
- Landon Beidelschies (2-2) took the loss on the mound. He struck out five and allowed three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes continue their series with the Mustangs March 9-11.
