
No. 13 Ohio State Falls to Charleston, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 11 Ohio State (11-6) fell to Charleston (14-2) Saturday at the Covelli Center in a nonconference matchup.
Samuel Clark led Ohio State with 18 kills. Jack Stevens (13) and Jacob Pasteur (11) also posted double figures.
How it Happened
Set 1
The opening set was tight early. The Buckeyes took a 7-5 lead on a kill by Jack Stevens and a Cole Young ace. The Golden Eagles came right back to tie it at 7-all. A Jacob Pasteur kill followed by a Michael Wright ace put Ohio State back up by two at 9-7. Charleston called timeout after a Stevens kill gave the Buckeyes an 11-8 lead. Charleston rallied to take a 17-16 lead after a 6-1 run. The teams began to trade points and after a 3-1 Ohio State run put the Buckeyes up 22-21, Charleston called its final timeout of the set. A Samuel Clark kill and Young ace put OSU up 24-22. After a Golden Eagles kill, Pasteur ended the match with a kill of his own for a 25-23 first-set win for the Buckeyes. Stevens led Ohio State with six kills. Charleston hit .684 while the Buckeyes won the set hitting .367.

Set 2
Neither team was able to build a lead until the Golden Eagles went up 8-6. The Buckeyes called timeout after a Charleston kill made it 10-7 Golden Eagles. Charleston increased its lead to 13-8 after a 5-1 run. Ohio State called its second timeout of the set after the Golden Eagles took a 17-11 lead. The Buckeyes went on a 4-1 run to make it 19-16 Golden Eagles. After a Charleston timeout, the Golden Eagles scored the next four for a 23-16 advantage. Ohio State then scored the next three before another Charleston timeout. The Golden Eagles then finished off the set with the next two points to win, 25-19 and tie the match at 1-all. Clark took over the kills lead with 10 after two sets.

Set 3
Charleston was the first to gain a sizeable edge with a 9-6 lead following a 5-1 run. A 3-1 run by the Buckeyes made it 10-9 Golden Eagles. Ohio State tied it at 14-all on a Stevens kill and Charleston error. The Golden Eagles scored the next two points for a 16-14 lead. Ohio State called timeout after a Charleston 4-1 run put the Golden Eagles on top 18-15. The Buckeyes cut it to 20-19 Charleston on a Justin Howard kill. The Golden Eagles called timeout after a Pasteur kill kept the Buckeyes within striking distance at 21-10 Charleston. A Pasteur ace then tied it at 21-all. Ohio State called timeout after Charleston used a 3-1 run for 24-22 lead. Ohio State scored the next point to prompt a Charleston timeout. The Golden Eagles then won the set 25-23 after an Ohio State error. Ohio State hit .550 in the set while Charleston hit .500. Clark upped his match total to 15 kills while Stevens reached double figures with 11.

Set 4
Ohio State took a 3-1 lead before the Golden Eagles tied it at 6-all. The Buckeyes went back up 8-6 on a pair of Charleston errors. The Golden Eagles then used a 3-0 run to claim the lead at 9-8. After a Pasteur ace put Ohio State in the lead 10-9, Charleston scored the next four points to take a 13-10 lead. Ohio State called timeout and scored four of the next six points to make it 15-14 Charleston. A Pasteur kill again cut it to one at 18-17 Golden Eagles but Charleston responded with a point (19-17) before Ohio State’s final timeout of the set. The Golden Eagles, leading 24-23, called their final timeout before a Pasteur kill tied it at 24-all. The set went into overtime where Charleston won 28-26 to earn a 3-1 match win.
