
No. 15 Buckeyes Battle But Fall 3-1 at No. 8 BYU

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 15 Ohio State (11-7) fell 3-1 at No. 8 Brigham Young University (11-6) Friday at the Smith Center in Provo, Utah. The teams will play again Saturday (9 p.m./BYUtv.com).
BYU won the close match 25-23, 25-23. 23-25, 25-21.
Jacob Pasteur led both teams with 24 kills. He hit .415 for the match and recorded his fourth match this season with 20 or more kills. He also has double-digit kills in 14 matches this season.
Setter Noah Platfoot was credited with 43 assists and led the Buckeyes with eight digs.
How it Happened
Set 1
Jacob Pasteur got the first kill of the match to give Ohio State the lead out of the gates. The Buckeyes then jumped to a 5-2 lead after a 3-0 run and a Pasteur ace. The Cougars came back to take a 7-6 lead on a 5-1 run. After a 4-1 Ohio State run, the set went to a media timeout with the Buckeyes leading 15-13, the largest lead for either team since the Buckeyes led 6-4. BYU tied it at 16-all and the teams traded points again. The Buckeyes called timeout with the Cougars leading 23-22 after a 3-1 run. BYU came out of the timeout and scored two of the next three points to win the set, 25-23. Neither team hit well in a defensive battle. The Cougars won the hitting battle .172-.114 in the opening win. Pasteur led the Buckeyes with four kills.
Set 2
The Cougars jumped to a 3-0 lead early in the second. BYU maintained at least a three-point edge until back-to-back Buckeye points made it 9-7 Cougars. Ohio State remained withing striking distance with a Wetzel kill and ace followed by a BYU error to make it 13-12 Cougars. BYU led 15-13 at the media timeout. The Buckeyes tied it (15-all) after the stoppage on a pair of Pasteur kills. A 3-1 Ohio State run tied it again at 18-all. The Cougars called timeout before the teams went back-and-forth until BYU took a 23-21 lead. Ohio State then called a timeout but the Cougars finished of the set to win 25-23. Pasteur upped his match total to 10 kills. The Buckeyes hit .333 in the set while BYU hit .241.
Set 3
The Buckeyes went up 5-2 in the third and kept the lead until the Cougars tied it at 6-all. BYU went up 8-7 and then 10-8 and kept the lead until the Buckeyes tied it at 11-all on consecutive Pasteur kills. The Cougars scored the next two and remained in the lead at the media timeout, 15-13. The Buckeyes scored the next three after the break on a Pasteur kill and two Wetzel aces. Down 16-15, BYU called timeout and tied it at 18-all after a 3-1 run. The Cougars then increased the run to 5-1 and a 20-18 lead before an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes tied it at 20-all but BYU scored the next two. Again, Ohio State got the tie at 22-all and took the lead on a block, 23-22. BYU called timeout but kills by Pasteur and Clark around a BYU kill gave the Buckeyes the 25-23 win. Pasteur led both teams with 17 kills while the Buckeyes hit .312 in the set.
Set 4
Ohio State started well in building a quick 4-2 lead. BYU did not allow separation and tied the set at 5-all. The Cougars took a 12-9 lead after a 4-1 run. Ohio State called timeout but BYU stayed in front until a Pasteur kill and Jack Stevens ace tied the set at 16-all. The Cougars then called timeout and regained the lead at 19-17. BYU kept the lead to win the set, 25-21 and the match 3-1.
