COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team is looking to wrap up its swing of 14 consecutive games away from home on a high note when it travels to Florida for five games over six days starting Friday night at Stetson.
The Buckeyes play the host Hatters at 6:30 p.m. Friday in DeLand, Fla., before a noon Saturday matchup against Harvard and a 7 p.m. Sunday first pitch against Fairfield. Ohio State will then travel to Jacksonville to take on North Florida at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday and 3:05 p.m. Wednesday before its home opener against Liberty at 5:05 p.m. March 13.
LONSWAY AMONG BEST NATIONALLY THROUGH THREE WEEKENDS
Redshirt sophomore left-hander has been dominant through his first three starts of 2020. After punching out 13 in 5.0 scoreless innings last Saturday at Lipscomb, Lonsway is tied for the NCAA lead with N.C. State’s Nick Swiney with 37 strikeouts while leading the country with 20.81 strikeouts per nine innings. Reid Detmers of Louisville is next-best with 18.56 strikeouts per game after fanning 33 in 16.0 innings.
A native of Celina, Ohio, Lonsway has allowed just two earned runs to rank fourth in the Big Ten with a 1.12 earned-run average in 16.0 innings pitched and has allowed opponents to hit just .164.
BUCKEYE STAFF FANNING OPPONENTS AT RECORD RATE
After striking out a program-record 583 batters in 577.1 innings a year ago, the Ohio State staff has been striking out its opponents at a record pace through three weeks. The Buckeyes lead the country in 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings, better than second-best Vanderbilt and Texas Tech, who are striking out 12.7 batters per nine.
