COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team posted six runs on 11 hits, while junior left-hander Tanner Tully tossed seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 shutout win over Iowa in the series opener Friday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With their third shutout of the season, the Buckeyes improve to 30-15-1 overall and 9-7 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes drop to 21-22 overall and 7-9 in league play.
“I’m pleased with our performance tonight,” head coach Greg Beals said. “That’s Ohio State baseball and that’s what we are capable of. We played against a really good baseball team tonight. This is the time of year when we need to be dynamic with extra-base hits and turning double plays. Tanner competed on the mound and we were ready to hit the pitch we were looking for. I was happy with our offense.”
Tully earned his seventh quality start of the season to improve to 6-3 in 2016. At the dish, three Buckeyes had three-hit games. Craig Nennig was 3-for-5 with a RBI, triple and run scored. Jacob Bosiokovic was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and triple and Jalen Washington was 3-for-4 with a run scored, and three RBI. Ronnie Dawson also launched his ninth homer of the season with a pair of RBI.
BUCKEYE SCORING PLAYS
After both teams left two on base in the opening inning, Ohio State struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a one-out, two-run single by Washington, who slapped a base hit on a 3-2 breaking ball off Iowa starter C.J. Eldred, who dropped to 2-7 on the year. Bosiokovic had a bunt single before L Grant Davis lined a double down the right field line to set up the co-captain catcher to push both runners home.
The Buckeyes powered three runs across the plate vs. Eldred in the fourth. Washington doubled to right center to start the surge. A RBI triple by Nennig made it 3-0 before Dawson ripped a two-run home run over the wall in right center for his 20th career home run and push the lead to five runs. Bosiokovic tripled for the second time in two games in the following at-bat vs. Iowa reliever Jared Mandel. Washington hit another 3-2 pitch for a RBI single to right center to plate Bosiokovic for the 6-0 lead.
TULLY TALK
Tully battled through a shaky first inning and settled down nicely on the bump vs. the Hawkeyes. The native of Elkhart, Ind., Tully labored with 25 pitches in the opening stanza, but stranded two with a ground out. Tully went on to throw seven shutout innings, scattering four hits with three walks and four strikeouts for his sixth win of the year.
STRONG DEFENSE TONIGHT
The Buckeye infield turned three double plays in the ball game to support Tully. Following a lead-off single in the second, Nennig and Davis turned two before Davis made a nice back-hand slide and throw for the final out. Troy Kuhn stepped on the bag at third base in the fifth with the bases loaded for the third out to keep the shutout intact. In the sixth, Nennig and Davis turned an inning-ending double play for Tully. The two combined for a third turn in the eighth as well. Kyle Michalik tossed the final two frames and limited the Hawkeyes to a hit with two punch outs.
