COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team concluded the 2016 home schedule with a 2-0 shutout win over Eastern Michigan Tuesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With their sixth straight victory, the Buckeyes improve to 36-16-1 overall, while the Eagles drop to 20-31 in 2016.
“We finished up strong to close the home schedule and that’s what we wanted to accomplish tonight,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It was a trap game between two big conference series for us, but our pitching and defense were both strong tonight. It went as scripted from a pitching staff standpoint and we were able to get everybody some work to stay sharp for the big weekend ahead.”
Senior co-captain Nick Sergakis went 2-for-3 with a run scored and walk, while senior left-hander Daulton Mosbarger earned the win to improve to 2-0 and redshirt sophomore Yianni Pavlopoulos picked up his 12th save of the year.
BIG TEN SHOWDOWN IN MINNEAPOLIS UP NEXT
Ohio State concludes the regular season at first-place Minnesota (15-5) Thursday-Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn. The Buckeyes sit in third place with a 13-8 mark tied with Nebraska (13-8), who hosts second-place Indiana (15-6) this weekend in Lincoln, Neb. The Top 8 teams advance to the 2016 Big Ten Tournament held May 25-29 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a 1-2-3 first from Mosbarger, Ohio State scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first vs. 6-6 right-hander Brent Mattson. Sergakis lined a single to left field and reached third base after a stolen base and passed ball. Nennig pushed a groundball to shortstop to plate Sergakis for the first run. Ronnie Dawson followed with an infield second and stole his 16th bag of the year to reach third base safely. A Troy Montgomery infield single made it a 2-0 lead.
ON THE BUMP
Senior left-hander Daulton Mosbarger, from Bellefontaine, Ohio, gave coach Beals four solid innings on the mound, allowing just two hits on no runs with three strikeouts and no walks in his fourth start of the year. Right-hander Austin Woodby pitched one inning on no runs or hits. Right-hander Kyle Michalik tossed a scoreless sixth inning with a strikeout before right-hander Ryan Feltner pitched a scoreless seventh with a strikeout. Right-hander Seth Kinker threw tossed the eighth straight shutout frame with one strikeout and right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos closed out the game with his 12th save of the year after a scoreless ninth.
