COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team claimed its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over Morehead State Tuesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 20-11-1, while the Eagles drop to 19-14 in 2016. The contest is set to re-air on Big Ten Network at Noon ET Thursday.
“It was a big midweek game for us to get back on the horse and that was the battle cry to the team today,” head coach Greg Beals said. “We got a great start from Woody [Woodby]. All of the pitchers did well. It was great to get Pav [Pavlopoulos] back out there and get his confidence going again. We went right back at it tonight.”
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Austin Woodby tossed a career-high five scoreless innings on four hits to improve to 4-1 in 2016. Redshirt sophomore right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos claimed his seventh save of the year. Senior Ryan Leffel scored the lone run of the game with a RBI double in the bottom of the second inning, while redshirt junior Jacob Bosiokovic went 2-for-4.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Ohio State scored the lone run of the evening in the bottom of the second. Leffel pulled a 3-1 pitch down the line for a RBI double to score Troy Kuhn. That’s all the OSU pitching staff would need to help the Buckeyes pick up their seventh straight win in Columbus.
WOODBY SOLID, STRONG DEFENSE TOO
Woodby pitched a career-high five scoreless innings, scattering six hits with one walk and one strikeout vs. the Eagles. He stranded a runner on base in the first, fourth and fifth behind a strong defensive Buckeye unit. L Grant Davis caught a hard liner up the middle and pumped a throw to first base for a key double play after a lead-off single in the fifth. He tossed 57 pitches on the night with 35 strikes.
TO THE BULLPEN…
Sophomore Right-hander Seth Kinker pitched the next 2.2 frames and limited the Eagle bats to no runs on two hits with one strikeout. Senior left-hander Michael Horejsei came in with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and fielded a ground ball to retire the side. In the ninth, Pavlopoulos put Morehead State down in order with a strikeout to end the game.
