COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State baseball team fell short, 3-2, against UNLV Saturday afternoon in game two of a three-game series at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The loss snap’s a six-game win streak for the Buckeyes (23-8). The Scarlet and Gray rallied to tie the contest at 2-all in the seventh, but the Rebels (14-19) plated a run in the eighth to help claim the Pat Porter extended his hit streak to 11-consecutive games. road win in Columbus.
“It was a well-played ball game and we fell short by a run tonight,” head coach Greg Beals said. “We had an unfortunate error to allow them to get the go-ahead run and Pat Porter barely misses a ball that would have given us the lead in the previous inning too. Their pitchers did a really good job of pitching ahead in the count. The great thing about baseball is that we are playing a three-game series and we have chance to win a series tomorrow.”
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, senior co-captain Aaron Gretz awakened the crowd of 1,321 fans in attendance when he belted his first home run of his career to tie the contest at 2-2 vs. UNLV starter D.J. Myers, who limited Ohio State to four hits in the first six frames. Ohio State then loaded the bases vs. reliever Joey Lauria, but a grab at the wall by the UNLV right fielder on a swing by Porter kept it tied after seven. Lauria received the win to improve to 3-2, throwing 0.2 innings and allowed one walk with a strikeout.
But the Rebels regained the lead in the next at bat when Payton Squier cracked a sac fly to right field to plate Joey Armstong from third base vs. right-hander relief pitcher Jake Post. Armstrong singled to begin the inning then reached third base on a stolen base and OSU throwing error.
In a no decision, Ohio State starting pitcher Travis Lakins had another quality start, scattering six hits in seven innings of work on six hits, one walk and
six strikeouts. Post received the loss to fall to 2-3, throwing two innings and allowed one run on two hits.
UNLV crossed the plate in the top of the fourth when Edgar Montes singled to left field to push Joey Armstrong around for the 1-0 lead. Lakins left two on base following the scoring play with a fly out. Ohio State had a chance to even it up in the bottom half, but Myers induced a fly out to left field to leave two on base.
Lakins had a quick fifth thanks to a nice turn by L Grant Davis and Craig Nennig for the inning-ending double play. In the sixth, he went 1-2-3 with his fifth strikeout.
The Buckeyes once again had two aboard in the sixth vs. Myers after Troy Montgomery singled and Connor Sabanosh walked, but a strikeout and fly out closed the door on the Scarlet and Gray in the frame.
In the seventh, the Rebels extended the lead to 2-0 on a two-out RBI by Morgan Stotts. Lakins kept it a two-run deficit when he fired a fastball by Nick Rodriguez with two runners in scoring position.
Ohio State and UNLV close out the series at 12:05 p.m. ET Sunday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. Left-hander Ryan Riga (5-1, 1.40 ERA) is on the hill for the Scarlet and Gray, while the Rebels will have right-hander Blaze Bohall (3-2, 3.57 ERA).
