EVANSTON, Ill. – Eric Thompson (Jr., Fairborn, Ohio) fired his second complete game of the year, a three-hit 12-1 win over Northwestern to tie the series at one game apiece.
The Wildcats took it to the Buckeyes in game one yesterday, pounding out 21 hits en route to a 15-9 victory. The Buckeyes got on the board early, jumping out to a 3-0 in their first at bat. Mark Carek (Sr., Bowling Green, Ohio) singled to left field and moved to second when Dan Seimetz (Sr., Massillon, Ohio) dropped a high fly ball safely between the third baseman J.P. Williamson and left fielder Ken Kilian. Carek moved over to third on a wild pitch by Nick Franzese and scored when Mike Kremblas (Sr., Carroll, Ohio) singled to right field.
Jason Trott (Jr., Dublin, Ohio) stepped to the plate and doubled to right center, scoring Seimetz and Kremblas. OSU added another run in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-0. Lou Santangelo (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio) led of the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Chad Ehrnsberger (Fr., Kalida, Ohio).
Mike Lockwood (So., Powell, Ohio) sacrificed to right field to score Santangelo to increase the Buckeye lead. Mike Stritch gave the Wildcats their first run of the game when he roped Thompson’s 2-1 pitch over the 375 mark in right field. The Scarlet and Gray came right back in the top of the fifth, scoring twice to take a 6-1 lead. Kremblas led of the inning reaching first when Williamson’s throw to first pulled Patrick Thompson of the bag.
Trott tripled to right center field, scoring Kremblas and came home himself when Franzese’s wild pitch skidded away from catcher Joe Hietpas. Franzese gave way to Dan Padgett in the fifth inning and he was knocked around in the sixth but still managed to hold the Bucks to a pair of runs. Carek and Seimetz knocked back-to-back singles to center field to lead off the inning and Kremblas was intentionally walked giving the Buckeyes runners on all bases.
Trott singled to left to bring in Carek and Kremblas came home when Dan Zabloudil (So., Newark, Ohio) reached first on catcher’s interference. The Buckeyes pounded out four more runs in the seventh inning for a 12-1 lead that would hold for the duration. OSU moves to 13-5 on the year and will play the Wildcats in game two of a double header today.
