
Islanders Rally Late to Win 3-2 over Ohio State Monday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Ohio State baseball team fell, 3-2, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday afternoon at Chapman Field. The Islanders (5-4) rallied with three runs in the bottom of eighth in route to the win over the Buckeyes. With the loss, Ohio State drops to 5-3 in 2019.
FIRST CAREER HOMER
Freshman third baseman Zach Dezenzo, from Alliance, Ohio, launched a 1-0 pitch off left-handed starter A.G. Ayala for a two-out, solo home run in the top of the fifth. It was his first homer of his career.

ON THE MOUND
Junior right-handed pitcher Jake Vance started the game and pitched four scoreless innings, limiting the Islanders to one hit with four walks and one strikeout in a no decision. He was relieved by right-hander Will Pfennig, who tossed three scoreless innings with three hits, one walk and one strikeout. Right-handed reliever Bayden Root received the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks.
Ayala fanned six and limited the OSU bats to one hit and one run in five innings. Reliever Zach Rumfield received the win after throwing three innings of relief and gave up one run on one hit with four strikeouts.
ISLANDERS RALLY
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored three runs on one hit and one OSU throwing error to take a 3-1 lead in the eighth. Nick Anderson led it off with a lead-off triple. Following a walk, a failed pickoff at first base allowed Anderson to score the tying run. With a runner on third base, Steven Rivera-Chijin pushed home the go-ahead run on a RBI ground out. A sac fly made it 3-1.
OHIO STATE COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
The Buckeyes cut the lead to one run on an infield single by Cherry, scoring Noah West in the top of the ninth. However, a ground out ended the game, leaving two OSU runners stranded.
GAME NOTES
- The Islanders left 11 on, while Ohio State stranded four.
- Zach Dezenzo knocked his first career home run today. He has a hit in his last three games.
- Malik Jones has reached base in all eight games. Dominic Canzone has reached safely in four straight games.
- Pfennig has not allowed an earned run in 8.2 innings of relief to begin his collegiate career.
