DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team fell, 8-3, at Bethune-Cookman Monday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Buckeyes (7-5) split the four-game road series with the Wildcats (5-6).
MISCUES COSTLY IN SECOND
The Wildcats scored six runs on four hits and one error in the second. An infield single scored the first run. An error at third base followed by a fly ball that was lost in the sun then made it 5-0. A RBI single pushed the sixth run home.
BUCKEYES GET ON THE BOARD
Ohio State made it a 7-3 contest through five with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Marcus Ernst and Ridge Winand tallied the first score. Matt Carpenter pushed home Winand with a ground out to second. In the fifth, a single through the right side by Dominic Canzone cut the deficit to four runs. The Wildcats were able to score an eighth run in the seventh to make it back to a five-run advantage.
ON THE MOUND
Ohio State right-handed starting pitcher Jake Vance went five innings on with seven runs, two earned, five hits, four walks and three strikeouts. He falls to 1-1 in 2019. Left-handed reliever Mitch Milheim walked one in 0.2 innings to begin the bottom of the sixth. Right-handed reliever Will Pfennig worked one inning and gave up one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. Left-handed reliever Andrew Magno retired the final out of the seventh and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one walk.
UP NEXT
Ohio State travels to the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C., March 8-10, hosted by Michigan State University. The Buckeyes will face Furman, the Spartans and Western Carolina at Fluor Field.
