COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team continues its nine-game homestand with a four-game series vs. Hawai’i Thursday-Sunday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The series opens at 5 p.m. Thursday. Game two is slated for 5 p.m. Friday. The third contest will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday with the series finale starting at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Buckeyes (10-10) have won three of their last for games to begin their home schedule. The Rainbow Warriors (9-11) are making their first trip to Columbus this weekend.
PARKING
This weekend, in addition to a full slate of Buckeye home slates, the OHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament will be taking place at the Schottenstein Center. Events begin on Thursday and go through Saturday evening. Traffic and parking in and around this area will be altered and visitors are encouraged to allow extra time to get around. QUICK HITS
- Ohio State is 10-10 overall in 2019. The team began the year 4-0, including a sweep of Seton Hall at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Buckeyes also have wins against FGCU, Oral Roberts, Bethune-Cookman, Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky. Ohio State played its first 16 games on the road.
- The 2019 Buckeyes return 15 letterwinners from the 2019 NCAA Tournament team that finished with a 36-24 overall record. Key players returning include 2018 second team All-Big ten honoree Dominic Canzone, third team selection Conner Pohl and 2018 All-Big Ten Freshman standout Dillon Dingler.
- The team welcomed 15 newcomers to the spring roster. Eleven Buckeyes have made their debuts, including nine freshmen.
- Ohio State is led by ninth-year head coach Greg Beals. He is 271-213-1 overall at Ohio State and holds a 514-415-1 career coaching record. Beals has guided the team to NCAA Regional appearances in two of the last three years.
- The Buckeyes have won three of their last four games. The team took two of three vs. Lipscomb last weekend. Ohio State won, 10-8, last time out vs. NKU on Tuesday night.
- Ohio State is hitting .275 with 35 doubles and 19 homers. The team is slugging .420 at the dish.
- The Buckeyes lead the Big Ten in hits (187) and second in home runs (19), runs scored (119) and RBI (111).
- Brady Cherry is leading the Big Ten with 30 hits and second in batting average with a .380 mark. Dominic Canzone is the Big Ten runs leader with 21. Conner Pohl is second in the conference in hits (24).
- The OSU pitching staff has combined for a 4.43 ERA with 164 strikeouts in 172.2 innings of work.
- Canzone, Pohl and Dingler were each named to the Big Ten Preseason Watch List. Ohio State was picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten.
- This weekend marks the first meeting between Ohio State and Hawai’i.

LAST TIME OUT
Ohio State sprayed 14 hits, including a season-high seven extra-base hits in the win vs. NKU last Tuesday night in Columbus. Conner Pohl and Brady Cherry both had a pair of doubles. Nolan Clegg hit his first collegiate homer and Brent Todys knocked the go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh. Bayden Root earned his first career win after throwing 2.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts. Andrew Magno recorded the final out of the game to register his second save of the season.
CHERRY LEADING THE BIG TEN
Senior left fielder Brady Cherry has had a fantastic start to his senior season. He is leading the Big Ten in hits (30) and second in the league in average (.380). He is in the top 10 in seven other Big Ten offensive statistical categories. Cherry, from Pendleton, Ind., is first in total bases (50), second in doubles (8) third in slugging (.633), runs scored (18) and RBI (17), fourth in homers (4) and ninth in on-base percentage (.438).
OHIO STATE AS OF LATE
The Buckeyes are 3-2 in their last five games. The bats have been red hot as the team is hitting .350 with 40 runs scored and slugging .548 with 13 doubles, two triples and six homers. Conner Pohl is batting .588 (10-for-17) with eight RBI and Brady Cherry is hitting .545 (12-for-22) with seven runs scored, six doubles and six RBI. Zach Dezenzo has a .500 average (9-for-18) and slugging 1.111 with two doubles and three home runs.
BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Third baseman Zach Dezenzo was named Big Ten Freshman of the week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Dezenzo claimed his first career weekly award after hitting .467 (7-for-15) with four runs scored, one double, three homers and five RBI in four starts last week. He hit three home runs in the series win over Lipscomb, including two in his first game at Bill Davis Stadium last Friday. Dezenzo became the second Buckeye to earn the league’s top rookie honor. Freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Burhenn was recognized Feb. 18.

SCOUTING HAWAI’I
The Rainbow Warriors are hitting .256 as a team with 29 doubles, eight homers and 102 RBI. Scotty Scott is hitting .325 with five steals on the year. Alex Baeza has a .319 average with a team-high high four homers and 20 RBI. The pitching staff has combined for a 4.20 ERA with 167 strikeouts in 182 innings of work. Dylan Thomas was named a NCBWA Preseason Season Second Team All-American after tying the single-season school record with 14 saves in 2018. He has fanned 30 hitters in 24.0 innings of work with one save this spring. UH was picked to finish sixth in the Big West preseason poll.

Head coach Greg Beals weekly radio show with play-by-play announcer Matt Andrews returned this past week on AM 1460 ESPN. Tune in weekly to get Buckeye Baseball updates on the team at 6 p.m. each Monday throughout the spring. Radio broadcasts return at the start of Big Ten play at Rutgers March 29-31 on 1460 ESPN Columbus. Matt Andrews and Bob Spears will have the call. The Buckeyes will have 27 games on the air this spring, including Rutgers series (March 29-31), Cincinnati (April 3), Northwestern series (April 5-7), Dayton (April 10), Michigan series (April 12-14), Xavier (April 16), Maryland series (April 19-21), Iowa series (April 26-28), Minnesota series (May 3-5), Wright State (May 8), Penn State series (May 10-12) and the Purdue series (May 16-18).

Ohio State will be seen on a national telecast three times this spring. The Buckeyes will be seen on FS1 at 9 p.m. Friday, May 3 as the team opens a three-game road series at Minnesota. The second contest vs. the Gophers will be live on BTN at 3 p.m. ET Saturday, May 4. Ohio State will be on BTN in a home game vs. Wright State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 in Columbus.
