Ohio State picked up three key conference points in the win over Wisconsin, who entered the series two points ahead of the Buckeyes for first place in the WCHA standings.
How it Happened
- Ohio State took the lead early with a goal from sophomore forward Jordyn Petrie at 5:40 in the first period. A turnover by Wisconsin in its own zone gave Petrie the puck at the hash marks with space. She sent a wrist shot over the shoulder of Badger netminder Ryah Stewart with the help of a screen by Jordan Baxter.
- The Buckeyes doubled their lead with less than a minute to play in the first period on a power play goal by senior forward Sloane Matthews. A shot from Emma Peschel at the point hit Maxine Cimoroni net front and was knocked to Matthews, who was waiting along the goalie crease to send it into the back of the net with 32 seconds remaining in the opening period.
- Both teams were scoreless in the second period. Wisconsin outshot the Buckeyes, 17-7, in the frame, but MacLeod denied every chance. Wisconsin had three power play opportunities in the second period and had six shots on the player advantage, with MacLeod and the Buckeye penalty kill holding off every attempt.
- Cimoroni made another key deflection that led to a Buckeye goal at 2:35 in the third period, this time tipping a shot from Brooke Disher past the glove of Steward for the 3-0 Ohio State lead.
- Kassidy Carmichael recorded the Buckeyes' fourth and final goal of the game at 14:16, taking advantage of loose rebound. Sara Swiderski sent a shot from the point onto the pads of Stewart and the rebound found Carmichael wide open at the top of the goalie crease with a wide-open net.
- The Badgers' lone goal came at 17:02 after pulling their goaltender for the sixth skater.
- The win is Ohio State's first against Wisconsin this season and first in Madison since Feb. 23, 2024.
- Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall earned her 250th career win Saturday against Wisconsin. She is 250-84-22 in ten years as head coach of the Buckeyes. She is the 14th active head coach to record 250 career wins.
- Petrie recorded a career-high three points in the game. In addition to scoring the first goal, she assisted the team's third and fourth goals.
- MacLeod recorded her third straight game with at least 30 saves. She finished the day with a .986 save percentage, allowing just one goal to the Badgers, who averaged over five goals per game entering the series.
- Matthews' point streak is now up to six games with the goal in Saturday's contest.
- Sophomore defender Maria Roth was on the ice for all three Buckeye goals for a career-high +3 on ice.
